What’s Better: Rice vs. Quinoa vs. Pasta vs. Couscous
By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. It is important to eat a healthy balanced diet, which includes carbohydrates. Better known as carbs, this macronutrient gives you long-lasting energy throughout the day. There are lots of carbohydrates on the market, all with different nutrient profiles. There is likely an option that fits well into your diet no matter your nutrient needs! Let's take a look at how some of the most popular carbs – rice, couscous, pasta, and quinoa – compare to each other. Which is healthier to eat: rice or couscous or pasta or quinoa? Although all carbs can have a place in your diet in moderation, some are healthier than others. Quinoa not only has more protein and minerals than pastaGo to fettuccine product, couscous, or rice, but it also has a more favorable glycemic index. Glycemic index is a measure of how quickly a food can make your blood sugar rise and it’s an important metric for diabetics. The lower the number, the less a food will raise blood sugar. The protein content in quinoa is similar to that found in beans, meaning it is a complete protein profile. A complete protein profile means it has all the essential amino acids (e.g. the building blocks needed to build protein) needed to keep you healthy and strong. As it is a grain, quinoa is also high in fiber which aids in digestion and helps lower cholesterol. Although it looks similar to quinoa when cooked, couscous and quinoa differ greatly in terms of their nutritional profile. Couscous has a nutritional profile similar to white pasta: high in carbohydrates without other health benefits such as fiber or protein content. These are similar to white rice, which also lacks fiber and protein content. Which has the most carbs: quinoa or pasta or couscous or rice? Pasta has the most “carbs per 100 gram cooked serving” at 33 grams, with white rice following as a close second at 28 grams. Couscous is third at 23 grams, and quinoa has the fewest carbs at 21 grams. Couscous and quinoa have a similar carbohydrate profile, while rice and pasta have more carbs. Which has the most calories: pasta or couscous or rice or quinoa? The calorie breakdowns for these grains are similar to the carbohydrate breakdowns. Pasta and white rice have the highest calories, while couscous and quinoa have the fewest calories. Pasta comes first at 160 calories per 100 gram cooked serving, followed by white rice at 130 calories. Couscous and quinoa switch places in terms of calorie ranking, with quinoa coming in at 120 calories and couscous at 112 calories. Which is better for a diabetic: rice or couscous or pasta or quinoa? Quinoa has the lowest glycemic load per 100 gram serving. Glycemic load is a number similar to glycemic index, but instead refers to how much the amount of food (100 grams in this comparison) raises a person's blood glucose level. Typically it is healthier for diabetics to eat foods with a lower glycemic load. Quinoa has the lowest glycemic load, and pasta has the highest glycemic load. Per 100 gram serving, quinoa has a glycemic load at 10, followed by couscous at 12, white rice at 15, and pasta right behind at 15.4. Which is the best for weight loss: rice or quinoa or pasta or couscous? Although all carbohydrate types can be part of a balanced diet while trying to lose weight, quinoa will give you your best bang for your buck. The protein levels in quinoa aid in slowing the digestion process which keeps you fuller for longer, leading to less snacking. In addition, quinoa has a low glycemic index. That means it will not spike your blood sugar levels (which lead to cravings and ultimately unhealthy decisions around food). The fiber content in quinoa will also aid in slowing digestion, giving you that full feeling. Can you still eat rice, pasta, quinoa, and couscous when trying to lose weight? Yes, you can still eat rice, pasta, quinoa, and couscous while losing weight. It is important to keep your diet balanced when trying to lose weight and to eat fewer calories than your body burns. If you want to eat foods with higher carb content but not higher protein and fiber content – such as pasta, rice and couscous – eat them in moderation. Eliminating foods completely from your diet will only lead to cravings, so be sure to keep the foods you love in your diet – just enjoy them in smaller portions. Which is healthier: pasta or quinoa? Quinoa not only has more protein and minerals than pasta, but it also has a more favorable glycemic index. The protein content in quinoa is similar to that found in beans, meaning it is a complete protein profile – it has all the essential amino acids (e.g. the building blocks needed to build protein) needed to keep you healthy and strong. As it is a grain, quinoa is also high in fiber which aids in digestion and helps lower cholesterol. These are benefits that you will not get from eating pasta. Which is healthier: pasta or couscous? Although it looks similar to quinoa when cooked, couscous and quinoa differ greatly in terms of their nutritional profile. Couscous has a nutritional profile similar to white pasta, high in carbohydrates without other health benefits such as fiber or protein content. If you are looking to enjoy food with a higher carbohydrate content, there isn’t much difference between choosing pasta or couscous. Where can I buy fresh pasta online? Learn moreVegetarian Pasta: What’s the Best Pasta for Vegetarians?
By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. Vegetarian diets – focused on plant-based foods – have many benefits. These benefits include reducing the risk of chronic illnesses such as obesity, heart disease, and certain cancers. The staples of a vegetarian diet are eaten by most people on a regular basis – fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and legumes. Pasta is a great addition to any plant-based diet, since it is made from grain, easy to cook, and easy to incorporate with other vegetarian staples for full and nutritious meals. Can vegetarians eat pasta? Can vegetarians eat any type of pasta? Vegetarians can eat pasta. The only ingredients included in dried pasta are usually wheat flour and water. Fresh pasta usually includes egg. If you are a vegetarian that does not consume eggs, be sure to check that the pasta you are buying does not have egg listed as an ingredient. Examples of pasta that contain animal-based ingredients (other than eggs) is squid ink pasta, which uses squid ink to dye the pasta black, and ravioli filled with meat. What pasta is best for vegetarians? What vegetarian pasta is healthiest? There are many different types of pasta on the market that vegetarians can eat – with different choices whether you are trying to increase your protein intake, fiber intake, or both. At the top of the list of healthiest pasta for vegetarians is whole-wheat pasta, which can include 3 grams of fiber and 8 grams of protein per serving. Whole-wheat pasta will bump up the nutrition of your dish. Most people don’t eat enough fiber – which is good for our hearts and digestion – so consuming whole-wheat pasta can help increase fiber intake. Although it’s not made with a whole-grain, classic white flour pasta has a similar nutritional profile to whole-wheat pasta in terms of protein and fiber (9 grams and 3 grams respectively). There are also options of alternative pastas that will increase protein intake. These pastas include chickpea flour pasta and red lentil flour pasta. Both have at least 14 grams of protein per serving. Chickpea pasta also has 8 grams of fiber per serving, making it a filling and nutritious choice. In addition, red lentil pasta will provide you with 20% of your daily iron, which is important for vegetarians since they do not get iron from meat. What pasta dishes are best for vegetarians? What Italian pasta dishes are vegetarian? The best pasta dishes for vegetarians focus on vegetables such as pasta primavera, ravioli, tortellini, or pasta with plain tomato sauce, which are all Italian dishes that are vegetarian. It is also possible to substitute the meat out of most pasta dishes if you make them at home by using beans, vegetables, or meat substitutes instead. What pastas and pasta dishes can vegetarians not eat? Vegetarians can eat most types of pasta, especially if they eat eggs. Pasta dishes on the other hand are not as cut and dry. Meat-focused dishes such as spaghetti bolognese, lasagne, or meat-filled ravioli are a no go for vegetarians. However, when making pasta at home, meat can be substituted for beans or vegetables in most dishes, or meat substitutes if preferred. How to increase protein in vegetarian pasta? There are several options to increase protein intake in vegetarian pasta. One option is to use alternative pastas like chickpea flour pasta and red lentil flour pasta. Both have at least 14 grams of protein per serving and chickpea pasta also has 8 grams of fiber per serving, making it a filling choice. Another option is to include beans or high protein veggies like broccoli and pasta in your pasta dishes to increase the protein content of vegetarian pasta dishes. Learn moreWhat is Healthier: Pizza or Pasta?
By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. Pizza and pasta may be in a deadset tie for tastiness, but which is healthier? Each carb heavy delight has its own benefits and drawbacks, but if you are craving Italian flavors and want to keep your calories in check, which one should you choose? What is the difference between pizza vs. pasta nutrition? Pizza from a restaurant can run you up to 300 calories a slice – more depending on the toppings chosen. This can quickly eat away at the recommended average of around 2000 to 2500 calories a day, not to mention the amount of saturated fat and sodium. But pasta from a restaurant can rack up the calories too – an order of fettuccine alfredo at Olive Garden amounts to around 1,220 calories and 1,350 mg of sodium. Creamy sauces and cheese can make any pasta dish less healthy. Here is a quick snapshot comparing the nutritional content of a slice of cheese pizza versus a cup of cooked spaghetti with no sauce: Nutritional Content Slice of Cheese Pizza One Cup of Cooked Spaghetti Calories 285 220 Protein 12g 8g Carbohydrates 36g 43g Fat 10.4g 1.3g Does pasta or pizza have more carbs? Does pizza or pasta have more calories? One slice of cheese pizza has fewer carbs than one cup of cooked spaghetti – 36 grams in a typical cheese pizza versus 43 grams in one cup of pasta. However, pizza has more calories than pasta, 285 in a slice of pizza versus 220 in a cup of cooked pasta. This is attributed to the fact that the fat content in a slice of cheese pizza is much higher – almost 9 grams higher – than in a cup of cooked pasta. However, this analysis does not include any additional toppings that may be added to the pizza or sauces mixed with pasta. Is pizza healthier than pasta? Is pasta healthier than pizza? Pizza and pasta are similar in terms of nutritional value. Neither pasta or pizza would be labeled as healthy, but can be included in a healthy lifestyle in limited amounts. Although the fat content in a slice of cheese pizza is higher than in a cup of cooked pasta, this does not mean that pizza is healthier than pasta. Pasta is almost never eaten plain, and often has toppings such as creamy sauces and cheese added in. For example, a two cup serving of fettuccine alfredo has 660 calories, 10 grams of fat, 88 grams of carbohydrates, and 18 grams of protein. This is similar to the nutrition of around 2.5 slices of cheese pizza, which is a more reasonable portion. However, if toppings like pepperoni are added to pizza, the calorie content will also go up and the nutritional value can decline. Which is better for weight loss: pizza or pasta? With such a similar nutritional profile, pizza and pasta can be considered equal for weight loss. It is important to remember that whether eating pasta or pizza, portion size is key for weight loss - you can eat pizza and pasta while trying to lose weight if you are mindful of the amount you are eating! In addition, when focused on weight loss, it is important to eat whole-grain flours, which increases the fiber and protein content of your food. Fiber has a range of benefits including promoting weight loss, lowering blood sugar, fighting constipation, boosting heart health, lowering cholesterol, and feeding the “good” bacteria in our guts. High protein diets also have benefits for weight loss and metabolic health, so sneaking in extra protein in a carbohydrate source is always helpful. Making pizza or pasta at home and opting for whole-grain flours for the dough is a great option. You can also buy whole-grain pasta and pizza dough already made in most grocery stores. It is also important to focus on the toppings – stick with more vegetables, leaner proteins and less creamy sauces and cheeses on both pizza and pasta. What is the difference between pasta vs pizza flour? Is pasta vs pizza dough the same? Pizza flour and pasta flour are not the same. Pasta is generally made from semolina flour, whereas all-purpose flour is used to make pizza dough. This is because pasta dough requires a lower gluten content than pizza. In addition, pizza dough contains yeast because it must be leavened, whereas pasta dough does not. What is the difference between pizza sauce vs. pasta sauce vs. marinara sauce vs. tomato sauce? Which sauce is healthiest? Pizza sauce, pasta sauce, and marinara sauce are all types of tomato sauce. Pizza sauce is made with uncooked tomatoes that have been pureed, and pasta sauce is made with cooked tomatoes blended with garlic, herbs, and spices – also referred to as a marinara. Because pizza cooks in the oven, putting a pasta sauce – such as marinara – on a pizza is redundant, as you are cooking the sauce twice which changes the overall flavor profile. And vice versa with pasta – adding uncooked sauce to already cooked noodles will make the dish seem unfinished as the pasta sauce is meant to already have the flavors developed when added. Both types of tomato based sauce have similar nutrient profiles and are considered to be much healthier than cream based sauces. Where can I buy the best fresh pizza and pasta to make at home? Learn moreWhat’s Better: Pasta vs. Noodles vs. Spaghetti vs. Egg Noodles?
By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. Noodles, pasta, spaghetti – all these words probably make you think of a delectable meal smothered in sauce. While many of us tend to love a good pasta or noodle-based dish, do you know what the difference is between different types of noodles and pasta? In this article, we’ll describe how pasta, noodles, egg noodles, and spaghetti differ, as well as which option is the healthiest. What is the difference between pasta vs. noodles vs. spaghetti vs. egg noodles? The difference between pasta and noodles lies in the ingredients and processing used to make each. Pasta is made from a dough containing durum wheat and water, while noodles are made with water and flour that has been milled from common wheat. It’s important to note that pasta is always made with wheat, while noodles can be made from many different ingredients besides wheat, such as buckwheat, rice, beans, and quinoa. Once the dough is made, pasta undergoes an extruding process that creates varying shapes, whereas noodles go through a sheeting process. The sheeting process involves the noodle dough being rolled flat into a sheet before being pulled through a cutting machine that slices the dough into single strands. Spaghetti and egg noodles describe variations of pasta and noodles. Spaghetti is a type of pasta that is characterized by its long, stringy shape. As the name suggests, egg noodles are a type of noodle that is made by incorporating eggs (more egg than other noodle types) into the wheat flour-based dough. What is the health difference between noodles vs. spaghetti vs. pasta vs. egg noodles, e.g. for calories and carbs? A single serving of Pasta, such as spaghetti, contains 43 grams of carbohydrates and 221 calories. The nutritional profile of noodles differs depending on what is used to make the noodles. For example, one serving of rice noodles contains 44 grams of carbohydrates and 192 calories, whereas one serving of egg noodles contains 40 grams of carbohydrates and 221 calories. As you can see, traditional pasta, rice noodles, and egg noodles all have about the same amount of carbohydrates, while rice noodles contain slightly fewer calories. Are pasta and noodles the same thing? Do pasta and noodles taste the same? Pasta and noodles are not the same thing. The main differences between pasta and noodles are the ingredients used to make the dough and the process used to cut the dough. Depending on the texture of the noodle, you might think noodles taste similar to pasta. However, the preparation method used to make a pasta or noodle dish can greatly change the taste. While pasta is often boiled and covered in an Italian sauce, noodles are staples of Asian dishes, frequently pan-fried, stir-fried, or added to soups. Is spaghetti considered a noodle? Is spaghetti a type of pasta? Since the shape of spaghetti is similar to noodles, you may hear spaghetti and noodles used interchangeably. However, as defined by the National Pasta Association, a noodle must contain at least 5.5% egg content. Spaghetti does not match this criterion, and is therefore not considered a noodle. Similarly, the National Pasta Association defined pasta as being made with durum wheat and water. Since spaghetti is made with these ingredients and does not contain eggs, it is a type of pasta. What is healthier: pasta or noodles? Are egg noodles healthier than pasta? Some noodle varieties are healthier than pasta. This is because noodles can be made from a wide array of ingredients. Soba noodles, which are made from buckwheat flour, contain fewer calories and carbohydrates than other noodle varieties and pasta. Soba noodles are also high in protein and fiber as well as a great source of manganese. Egg noodles are not healthier than pasta, since they are high in carbohydrates and calories, just like pasta. The overall nutritional profile of egg noodles is very similar to that of pasta. Can I substitute egg noodles for pasta in a recipe? Can I substitute pasta for egg noodles? Yes, you absolutely can substitute noodles for pasta, and vice versa, in a recipe. While it is up to personal preference, note that egg noodle recipes typically suggest cooking the noodles until they are soft and tender, while pasta recipes recommend cooking the pasta al dente (slightly firm). Either way, if you’re in a pinch or just looking to try something different, you can’t go wrong with swapping pasta and egg noodles in your favorite recipe! Can you still eat bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes when trying to lose weight? Yes, you can still enjoy bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes while maintaining your weight loss goals. The key to losing weight is to be in a calorie deficit or consuming fewer calories than you burn. This means you will want to be aware of the number of calories in each of your meals. To help with this, opt for smaller portions and try swapping refined carbohydrates with those made from whole grains. Foods made from whole grains will keep you fuller for longer, helping you to stay on track with your daily calorie and weight loss goals. Which is healthier: pasta or rice? Pasta and rice are very similar nutritionally, with each containing approximately 30 grams of carbohydrates and less than 1 gram of fat and sugar. The main differences between refined (white) pasta and white rice are in the amount of calories, fiber, and protein in each. Pasta contains more calories, more fiber, and more protein than rice. However, many healthier varieties of pasta and rice are available that are more nutritious than their refined counterparts. Which is healthier: bread or rice? When looking at the nutritional content of a single serving of bread and rice, bread may be considered the healthier option. This is due to bread containing fewer calories and carbohydrates than rice. However, rice does contain more protein, vitamins, and minerals compared to bread. If you’re looking for a healthier alternative to white bread and white rice, try opting for multigrain bread, sourdough bread, rye bread, and brown rice. All of these options contain more nutrients than traditional bread and rice choices. Where can I buy fresh pasta online? Learn morePasta vs. Bread: Is Bread or Pasta Healthier?
By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. You can’t go wrong with pasta and bread as your favorite grain-based foods. While both are certainly delicious, do you know how they compare nutritionally? Read on to learn the differences between these two hard-to-resist foods and find out which will fit best with your lifestyle and diet. Is pasta healthier than bread? Is bread healthier than pasta? Pasta is not necessarily healthier than bread, and bread is not necessarily healthier than pasta. Regular, refined pasta and white bread are similar nutritionally and unfortunately are not very nutritionally dense. Refined pasta, the pasta most commonly consumed, contains about 220 calories, 43 grams of carbohydrates, and 1 gram of fat per serving. On the other hand, 1 slice of white bread contains about 60 calories, 13 grams of carbohydrates, and 1 gram of fat. However, whole grain pasta and whole grain bread are much healthier than regular bread and pasta. Pasta and bread made from whole grains contain more protein, fiber, and other essential nutrients, making these options more nutritious. Other bread options, such as sourdough bread and rye bread are also healthier bread alternatives. Is pasta or bread higher in carbs? Is bread or pasta more fattening? A single serving of refined pasta has approximately 70% more carbohydrates than a single slice of white bread. Neither bread nor pasta is more fattening than the other. Pasta and bread are both low in fat, each containing about 1 gram of fat. Which is harder to digest: pasta or bread? Generally, foods lower in fiber are easier to digest. Considering bread contains less fiber than pasta, with less than 1 gram of dietary fiber, and pasta contains about 2.5 grams of dietary fiber, pasta might be slightly harder to digest. However, Pasta that is made from refined grains is easier to digest than pasta made from whole grains, which contain more fiber. Certain bread types can also help digestion, such as sourdough bread. Does bread or pasta have more gluten? While there is no clear answer to this depending on the type of bread and pasta we are comparing, bread generally contains more gluten than pasta. This is because the amount of gluten in a food depends on the flour used. Bread flour can contain up to 13% gluten, while all-purpose flour, a flour often used in pasta, typically has 8-11% gluten content. However, these percentages can change based on the type of grain and flour used when making bread and pasta. Regardless, both white bread and conventional pasta are considered high-gluten foods. Luckily, there are gluten-free bread and pasta alternatives for those that have gluten intolerance or simply want to cut back on gluten consumption. Should I replace pasta with bread in a diet? Whether or not you should replace pasta with bread in your diet depends on the types of bread and pasta being considered and what your health goals are. If you are wanting to reduce calories consumed for a certain meal, you may want to opt for bread instead of pasta for that meal. Alternatively, you can replace both pasta and bread with their respective whole grain varieties. Whole grain pasta and bread are more nutritionally dense than refined grain alternatives and tend to keep you full for longer (i.e. white bread). Is bread or pasta better for weight loss and fat loss? Which should I give up to lose weight: pasta or bread? When choosing between pasta and bread, both can work for weight or fat loss. Whole grain options are best for weight and fat loss. Whole grains have been shown to aid in the elimination of belly fat. Pasta and bread made from whole grains also tend to be higher in fiber, which can help you stay full for longer. You don’t necessarily need to give up any one food while staying on track with your weight loss goals. In fact, weight loss maintenance is most successful when abiding by a sustainable lifestyle and diet. Many times, completely giving up any one food is not sustainable, since it causes you to crave it even more, which can cause you to fall behind in your weight loss goals. The best course of action is to enjoy your favorite and sometimes higher-calorie foods in moderation, to be conscious of portion size, and to choose healthier versions of your favorite foods when possible. Pasta and rice take the lead in most carbohydrates when compared to potatoes and bread, with both pasta and rice having approximately 45 grams of carbohydrates per serving. A medium-sized potato contains 25 grams of carbohydrates and a single slice of white bread contains 13 grams of carbohydrates. Which is better for a diabetic: potatoes or pasta or rice or bread? Diabetics need to be mindful of the glycemic index of foods, a metric that indicates how quickly a food causes blood sugar levels to rise. Foods that are broken down more quickly cause blood sugar levels to rise rapidly and are therefore marked with a higher glycemic index. For this reason, Pasta is the best option for a diabetic as it is rated as a low-glycemic index food. In contrast, potatoes, rice, and bread all fall under the high-glycemic index rating and are less good options for diabetics. Which is the best for weight loss: rice or potatoes or pasta or bread? The best option for weight loss depends on the type of rice, potatoes, pasta, or bread consumed. In general, it is recommended to avoid refined varieties of these foods, such as white rice, white potatoes, white pasta, and white bread. This is because foods made from refined grains often trigger a cycle of cravings, making it difficult to control portion size and calories consumed. If you would still like to enjoy these foods, it’s best to choose healthier alternatives such as brown rice, sweet potatoes, or wheat pasta. For delicious and nutritious bread options, sourdough bread and rye bread are higher-nutrient foods that will make it easier to achieve your weight loss goals. If you’re looking for a healthier alternative to white bread and rice, try opting for multigrain bread, sourdough bread, rye bread, and brown rice. All of these options contain more nutrients than traditional bread and rice choices. Where can I buy fresh bread and fresh pasta online? Learn moreGnocchi vs. Pasta: Is Gnocchi a Healthy Alternative to Pasta?
By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. Pasta is one of the most popular foods in the world. Many believe that the potato-based nuggets known as gnocchi fall under the category of pasta, but some categorize them as dumplings. No matter what you consider gnocchi to be, it is often used in similar ways to pasta. However, pasta is mainly wheat-based, whereas gnocchi are potato-based, so which is healthier? What is gnocchi? Is gnocchi a pasta or potato? Gnocchi originates from Italy and is typically made using flour, eggs, and mashed potatoes. Other ingredients can be used in place of potatoes, including the Italian cheese known as ricotta. In Italian, the word gnocchi means “knuckle,” which is what the dumplings resemble. Gnocchi are often rolled onto the back of a fork to create indentations that hold onto whatever sauce they are tossed in. Some believe that gnocchi is a type of pasta, whereas others believe it is a form of potato dumpling. What’s the difference between ricotta gnocchi vs. potato gnocchi? Which is better: potato or ricotta gnocchi? Traditional potato gnocchi are made of potato bound together with flour and egg, whereas ricotta gnocchi replaces the potato with ricotta cheese. Because of ricotta’s springy texture and the lack of potatoes, ricotta gnocchi has a lighter texture than potato gnocchi. Both potato gnocchi and ricotta gnocchi are formed by rolling the dough into a log and cutting it into small nugget shaped portions. Because ricotta gnocchi are made with cheese, there is a higher protein content than is present in the carbohydrate-forward potato gnocchi. Is gnocchi healthier than pasta? Should I replace pasta with gnocchi? Similar to pasta, potato gnocchi is high in carbohydrates and low in protein. Although both are carbohydrate-heavy foods, it has been shown that regular pasta may have less of an effect on blood sugar levels. One publication points to the fact that pasta doesn’t raise blood sugar after a meal to the level that potatoes do. However, it is important to note that the study compared plain potatoes to pasta, not gnocchi to pasta. Which is better for weight loss: gnocchi or pasta? A two ounce portion of pasta contains around 43 grams of carbohydrates, with only two of those grams coming from fiber. Similarly, a two ounce portion of gnocchi contains 19 grams of carbohydrates, with only 0.9 grams coming from fiber. Although gnocchi does appear at first glance to be lower in carbohydrates, because it is denser, a two ounce portion will be smaller. Due to the smaller and denser nature of gnocchi, it is more likely that you will end up eating bigger portions than if you chose regular pasta. Although all foods can be part of a healthy diet in moderation, if you are trying to lose weight opt for other options than gnocchi or pasta. Which is better for muscle building: pasta vs. gnocchi? A high-carbohydrate diet is beneficial for those looking to build muscle. It has been found that in comparison to a low-carbohydrate diet, eating a high-carbohydrate diet before high-intensity exercise increased stamina, extended time before exhaustion was reached, and led to a higher amount of calories burned. Additionally, it is necessary to eat optimal levels of protein to gain muscle, and a two ounce portion of pasta contains 7.5 grams of protein, while the same size portion of gnocchi contains only 2.5 grams. Ricotta gnocchi may be a better option than potato gnocchi for those looking to gain muscle, since there is a higher protein content in the cheese-based dough. What is the difference between gnocchi vs. tortellini vs. ravioli vs. agnolotti? Gnocchi are potato-based dumplings that are not stuffed. Gnocchi are typically boiled and tossed in a tomato-based sauce. Tortellini, ravioli, and agnolotti are all stuffed Italian pastas made with semolina flour. Tortellini is a stuffed pasta in the shape of a ring. It usually has a meat or cheese-based filling and is traditionally served in broth. Ravioli are also a filled pasta. Ravioli usually consists of cheese, meat, or other ingredients stuffed between two thin pieces of pasta. This type of pasta is often square, and is typically tossed in a sauce that compliments what the ravioli is stuffed with. Agnolotti are a type of ravioli, from a specific region of Italy known as the Piedmont region. It can be square or in a half-moon shape, and are stuffed with beef or vegetables. Unlike ravioli, agnolotti does not typically contain cheese in the stuffing. Where can I buy the best fresh gnocchi and pasta online?
