Bread vs. Brioche: Which is Better Brioche or Bread?

By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.    Everyone loves bread, and it can always find a place in a healthy and balanced diet. However, with so many different types of bread, it can be confusing as to where some fall on the spectrum of nutritional foods. This is especially true for rich breakfast breads such as brioche, that are full of butter, eggs, and sugar. So how does brioche stack up against, for example, white bread? Read on to learn more. What is the difference between brioche vs. bread? Is brioche bread the same as white bread? Technically, brioche is a French pastry, rather than a bread, due to its light and airy texture and sweet flavor. Brioche bread is not the same as white bread; in fact, it is more similar to a croissant in texture and structure than it is regular bread. The base ingredients of white bread are flour, water, and yeast, whereas brioche includes eggs, milk, and butter in its recipe.  Why is brioche bread special? Brioche bread is sweet and pastry-like. However, it differs from a pastry because it also contains yeast and is prepared like a bread. The addition of eggs, milk, and butter give it a fluffier texture and sweet flavor that is much more similar to pastry than bread. In fact, to be characterized as brioche, a recipe has to contain 30% to 50% butter-to-total-flour weight.  How healthy is brioche? Brioche contains a higher protein content than plain white bread due to the inclusion of eggs, which is beneficial for health. However, due to the higher butter content in brioche, brioche contains more fat and more calories than other kinds of bread. Unfortunately, the fat content comes mainly from saturated fats, which should be limited to 5% to 6% of a person’s daily caloric intake, according to the American Heart Association. This does not necessarily make brioche unhealthy, but instead informs us to enjoy this delicious treat in moderation.  Is brioche better for you than bread? Is it healthier to eat brioche rather than bread? Is brioche good for weight loss? Is brioche better than bread for weight loss? In one slice of brioche bread, there are 110 calories – 1.5 grams of fat, 20 grams of carbohydrates, 4 grams of protein, and 1 gram of fiber. For one slice of white bread, there are 67 calories – 1 gram of fat, 13 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of protein, and less than 1 gram of fiber. Brioche and bread are in the same ballpark when it comes to weight loss in that both should be enjoyed in moderation. The slightly higher fiber and protein content in brioche bread is likely to help you feel satiated for longer than a plain slice of white bread. Consider pairing either with healthy fats, protein, and fiber to create a balanced meal.  What is the difference between brioche and bread rolls? As discussed in our All About Rolls article, brioche rolls and regular rolls are different in that brioche rolls require more eggs and butter in their recipe than regular rolls. Although both brioche rolls and regular rolls contain eggs and butter, the fact that brioche rolls contain more of these ingredients means that these rolls are higher in fat content. Is brioche healthy for diabetics? Is brioche better than bread for diabetics? Brioche bread should not be a first choice for diabetics. The glycemic index (GI) of brioche is 72, classifying it as a high GI food. GI is a measure of how quickly a food can make your blood sugar rise, on a scale of 1 to 100. A GI of 72 indicates that brioche bread will have a large effect on blood sugar, causing a spike. Compared to white bread, however, the GI of brioche is lower. Plain white bread has a GI of 90, which means it will cause an even larger spike in blood sugar than brioche.  What bread is closest to brioche? Challah bread is very similar to brioche, since it is made with eggs. It has a slightly sweet flavor and a soft, pillowy interior. Another substitute for brioche are croissants. Although these are not bread, but pastry, brioche is said to be more similar in texture to croissants than bread. They have a similar sweet flavor with a light and airy texture.  Where can I buy the best bread and brioche online? Bread vs. Crackers: Is Bread Healthier than Crackers?

By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.    Whether out of pure curiosity or related to your diet, most people have wondered if crackers are healthier than bread. In fact, lots of people will even cut bread out of their diet and opt for crackers or rice cakes when looking to reduce carbs. But is this doing more harm than good? Read on to find out more about the differences between crackers and bread and how you can keep both in a balanced healthy diet.  Are crackers better for you than bread? Is it healthier to eat crackers vs. bread? Bread and crackers both have pros and cons. Crackers are higher in calories and sodium than bread, and usually contain higher amounts of fat. In addition, crackers contain little to no fiber. However, in small quantities paired with foods that have fiber and protein, such as cheese and grapes, crackers can be a great addition to a healthy diet. Whole grain bread is also a healthy option, since it is higher in fiber and protein, which will keep you fuller for longer.  Are there fewer carbs in crackers than bread? Are there fewer calories in crackers than bread? How do the nutrition profiles of a saltine cracker versus a slice of whole wheat bread compare? A slice of whole wheat bread has 82 calories, around 14 grams of carbohydrates, 4 grams of protein, and 1 gram of fat. A serving of five saltine crackers has around 62 calories, 11 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of protein, and 1 gram of fat. In addition, a slice of whole wheat bread has almost 2 grams of fiber, whereas the crackers only contain around 0.5 grams. Are crackers healthy or unhealthy? Are crackers OK for weight loss? Do crackers have different nutritional value than bread? How many crackers equal a slice of bread? Although the nutrition profiles of bread and crackers don’t differ that much, the higher protein and fiber content in bread will leave you feeling fuller for longer. This does not make crackers unhealthy, but crackers should be eaten in moderation. Additionally combining crackers with other foods that have higher protein and fiber to increase can increase the feeling of fullness and reduce snacking.  To consume the same amount of calories of crackers as bread, you would have to eat around 7 crackers to one slice of bread. Yet, although the calorie intake would be similar, the nutritional profile would not. Crackers are almost exclusively carbohydrates and fat, while bread also contains protein and fiber.  However, when comparing crackers to a slice of white bread, the profile is not that different. One slice of white bread contains 67 calories, with 13 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of protein, and 0.5 grams of fiber. If you are trying to decide between crackers, and a slice of white bread, the difference is minimal.  Are crackers healthy for diabetics? Are crackers better than bread for diabetics? Cracker ingredients need to be carefully considered if you are diabetic. Some crackers are made with fiber-rich grains, but crackers without any fiber need to be avoided. Low fiber crackers may seem healthy if they have “whole grains” on the label, but this does not mean they aren’t full of refined carbohydrates and added sugar. These types of crackers can lead to spikes in blood sugar. The same goes for bread, stick to bread with a higher fiber and protein content to avoid blood sugar spikes.  Are crackers good for weight loss? Which are better for weight loss, crackers or bread? Crackers can be good for weight loss if eaten in moderation and combined with other foods (e.g. peanut butter, grapes, or cheese) to beef up the protein and fiber content of your snack. When trying to lose weight, you must consume less calories than you are burning, so the less hungry you feel, the less you will want to snack. In this case, the higher protein and fiber content of bread may be a better choice for snacking when trying to lose weight – or be sure to combine your crackers with healthy protein, fat, and fiber sources.   Where can I buy the best fresh bread online? Best Fermented Bread: Are There Health Benefits of Fermented Bread?

By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.      With homemade bread returning to popularity in recent years, you have probably seen a photo or two of at-home bread starter cultures. You, too, may have found a new love for sourdough bread and the labor-intensive and gratifying process to make it. You may be aware of how sourdough gets its flavor, but do you know what distinguishes the sourdough process from other types of bread? Continue reading to find out more about the process and potential health benefits of fermented bread. What is fermented bread? What makes some bread fermented? Any bread that goes through the fermentation process is referred to as "fermented bread." A bread is considered fermented if yeast is used in the dough. Yeast is a type of fungus that is essential for fermentation and is available in several forms, including fresh, active-dry, and instant yeast. Fermentation occurs when yeast converts the sugars found in flour into carbon dioxide and alcohol, causing the bread dough to rise. In the absence of yeast, bread cannot rise; popular breads that are not fermented include flatbread, soda bread, and cornbread. What type of bread is naturally fermented? What are examples of fermented bread? Naturally fermented bread refers to bread that uses naturally-occurring yeasts in the bread-making process, instead of the commercial yeast you can buy in the baking aisle of a grocery store. Fresh yeast, or yeast that occurs naturally in foods, can be captured in a few ways at home including incubating flour with water or adding dried fruits to water. Sourdough bread is an example of naturally fermented bread. Is sourdough fermented? Is rye bread fermented? Is French bread & baguettes fermented? Yes, since yeast is used to make all of these bread varieties, sourdough bread, rye bread, French bread and baguettes are all fermented. More specifically, sourdough bread is traditionally made with fresh (wild) yeast, but store-bought yeast is frequently used to make rye bread, French bread, and baguettes. However, wild yeast can also be used for these breads. Is fermented bread good for you? Fermented bread is not automatically healthier however, the unique fermentation process that sourdough bread undergoes means sourdough bread is usually more nutritious than other types of bread. The slow fermentation process of sourdough bread makes calcium, phosphorus, and iron more available for the body to absorb and also provides additional health benefits such as lower blood sugar levels, improved digestion, and disease prevention. Is store-bought sourdough bread fermented? Store-bought sourdough bread is likely fermented, however, it is important to note that fermentation only refers to the use of yeast in bread making. Because grocery store sourdough bread often does not use a traditional sourdough starter, which calls for a slow fermentation process, it may not provide the same health benefits as sourdough bread from bakeries or Wildgrain. Is fermented bread better for you? Is fermented bread good for gut health? Naturally fermented bread is typically healthier than commercially fermented and non-fermented bread. Sourdough bread, for example, undergoes a days-long fermentation process that allows the body to absorb the bread’s nutrients and antioxidants more readily. Bread like sourdough that is naturally fermented also promotes gut health. Studies have shown that sourdough bread acts as a prebiotic and is lower in gluten, making this bread easier to digest than other types of bread. What's the best fermented bread for your health? The best fermented bread is bread that uses wild or naturally occurring yeast as opposed to store-bought yeast. Bread made with wild yeast and a longer fermentation process boasts an enhanced nutritional profile compared to bread made with commercial yeast. Studies have also shown that bread made with wild yeast helps stabilize blood sugars and is easier to digest. To further increase the health benefits of naturally fermented bread, be sure to choose bread made with 100% whole grains. Where can I buy the best fermented bread online? Best Bread for Vegans & Plant-Based Diets

By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.    Although the simplest form of bread – flour, water, yeast, and salt – is vegan, not all bread falls into the category of vegan. Vegans exclude all foods derived from animals in their diets, for instance meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, and honey. As such, it can be challenging to tell whether a food contains animal products or animal byproducts. Bread is one of the foods that can be challenging to determine if it is vegan.  What bread is best for vegans? Can vegans eat any bread? Do vegans need special bread? Vegans can eat bread that does not contain animal products or byproducts. This includes breads that only use some variation on flour, water, yeast, and salt including ciabatta, baguette, focaccia, sourdough, pita, and ezekiel breads. Vegans do not need special bread, they just need to make sure to check the ingredients before buying bread or substitute vegan ingredients if making their own bread. What breads are good for a plant-based diet? What breads are healthiest for a plant-based diet? Multigrain breads, whole grain breads, and breads that use sprouted grains, such as ezekiel bread are packed with health benefits and are great for a plant-based diet. Breads made from refined flours do not contain the fiber and protein that whole grain, multigrain, or sprouted grain breads offer. Protein is important for vegans as they do not eat animal products, so all of their protein must come from plant-based sources. In addition, fiber is an important ingredient no matter what diet you choose – it helps regulate digestion, plays a role in heart health, and also has a hand in lowering cholesterol. Because of these factors, the best breads to eat on a plant-based diet are those full of fiber and protein, like multigrain bread, whole grain bread, and bread with sprouted grains.  What bread can vegans not eat? Vegans can’t eat any bread that contains animal products or byproducts. Although many types of bread are naturally vegan, ingredients such as eggs, milk, butter, and honey are used in some recipes to give dough a specific consistency and flavor. Examples of breads that add these enhancements include challah and brioche. However, it is also important for vegans to check the label of all store bought breads because companies often add milk products, honey, or eggs to many breads that would seem vegan-friendly. Can vegans eat sourdough bread? Is sourdough bread a vegan food? What’s the best sourdough bread for vegans? Sourdough is made from a starter culture – a mixture of flour and water that ferments and develops natural yeasts. This, along with flour, water, and salt create sourdough bread. As such, most sourdough bread is vegan, but when buying store bought bread it is always important to check the label. As long as it does not contain animal products or byproducts, any sourdough bread is great for vegans.  Can vegans eat wheat bread? Is wheat bread vegan? What’s the best wheat bread for vegans? Just like white bread, wheat bread contains just flour, water, yeast, and salt. The only difference is the type of flour used. Wheat bread is made with whole wheat flour instead of the refined all-purpose flour used in white bread. However, many brands will add honey for sweetness, or eggs for leavening and protein content. The wheat bread best for vegans is made with whole-wheat flour and sticks to the original four ingredients – flour, water, yeast, and salt – with no other additives or animal products.  What do vegans use instead of butter on bread? Many companies offer plant-based alternatives to butter. These alternatives are made with different types of plant oils including coconut oil, vegetable oil, or safflower oil, just to name a few. Often, margarine, a butter substitute, is also vegan and can be used in place of butter on bread.  Where can I buy the best vegan bread online? At Wildgrain, we specialize in making high-quality, fresh breads that are delivered directly to your door. Wildgrain is the first bake-from-frozen delivery subscription service for breads, rolls, pastries, and fresh pastas. Some of our popular vegan breads include sourdough, ciabatta, and baguettes. Best Bread for Protein: Are There Health Benefits of High Protein Bread?

By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.      You may have heard that you should consume more protein or that eating a diet high in protein can have some advantages for your health. Many people are aware that meats and eggs are good sources of protein, but did you know that some types of bread can also be a great source of protein? To find out which bread contains the most protein and how to add more protein to your diet by making a simple change, keep reading! Does bread have protein? How much protein does bread usually have? While bread does contain protein, the amount depends on the type of bread. For example, one slice of white bread contains about 3 grams of protein. However, whole wheat or whole grain bread tends to contain more protein than white bread, with some varieties containing more than double the protein content of white bread. Wildgrain’s slow-fermented 3-seed bread falls in this category - it has 7 grams of protein per serving! Remember that the amount of protein in whole wheat bread depends on the baker or company that manufactures the bread. Because of this, you’ll want to always check the nutrition label when searching for higher-protein bread options. What are the health benefits of high-protein bread? Is protein bread actually healthy? Increasing your protein intake by consuming high-protein bread may result in some health benefits, including better blood sugar control, weight management, and enhanced muscle mass. Foods that are higher in protein can also help you to feel satiated or feel full for longer. This can make it easier for you to lose and maintain weight. Additionally, keeping your protein intake high can help to prevent muscle mass loss during weight loss. All in all, protein bread is healthy, especially since higher protein bread options tend to be made from 100% whole wheat, one of the healthiest and most nutritious types of bread. Is protein bread high in carbs? The carbohydrate content of protein bread varies depending on the type of bread and the ingredients the baker uses. Some high-protein bread options have 10 grams of carbs, while others can have 28 grams of carbs per serving – which is more than traditional white bread. If you’re looking to increase your protein intake from bread while reducing your carbohydrate intake, you should carefully review the nutritional information of various types of bread to determine which bread best aligns with your diet and health goals. Is sourdough bread high in protein? Sourdough bread is high in protein. In fact, sourdough bread typically has more protein per serving than a single slice of traditional white bread. In some sourdough varieties, one serving of bread may contain as much as 8 grams of protein. That’s more protein than one egg contains! The unique fermentation process used to make the bread dough activates amino acids, which in turn increases the protein content, accounting for the higher protein content of sourdough bread. What bread is high in fiber and protein? There are a few bread options that are the highest in both protein and fiber content. This includes sourdough bread, 100% whole wheat bread, and sprouted bread. One slice of traditional white bread often contains less than 1 gram of fiber. Conversely, sourdough bread, whole wheat bread, and sprouted bread all contain at least 3 grams of fiber while also having higher protein content per serving.   What bread has the highest protein? What is the best bread for protein? Sourdough bread, sprouted bread, and any bread made from 100% whole wheat or whole grains (including multigrain bread) have the most protein. However, not all bread is created equal. A closer look at the nutritional label of your bread options is necessary to determine which bread is the best choice for your protein requirements. What bread can you eat on a protein diet? You can eat any kind of bread while on a protein diet! However, it is neither practical nor healthy for bread to be your only protein source. When eating a diet high in protein, you should strive to get your protein from a variety of foods throughout the day, such as lean meats, seafood, nuts, eggs, and other dairy products. Opting for bread with a higher protein content, like sourdough bread, can help you meet your protein goals. Where can I buy healthy bread online? Best Bread for Fiber: Are There Health Benefits of High Fiber Bread?

By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.      Did you know that some types of bread contain more fiber than others? You've probably heard that fiber is healthy for you, and you may be aware that some foods contain more fiber than others. To learn more, keep reading to discover which breads will help you to eat a high-fiber diet, as well as the health benefits that can result from incorporating more fiber into your meals. Does bread have fiber? How much fiber does bread usually have? All bread contains fiber, however, certain types of bread have more fiber than others. A slice of white bread usually has around 0.6 grams of fiber, while a slice of whole wheat bread has more than triple the amount of fiber found in white bread with 1.9 grams of fiber. Similarly, bread made from whole grains can contain up to 5 grams of fiber per slice. What are the health benefits of high-fiber bread? Consuming a diet high in fiber has been shown to result in numerous health benefits. One of the ways to do this is to choose bread that is high in fiber. Some health benefits of high-fiber bread include improving digestion, stabilizing blood sugar, attaining a healthy weight, and lowering cholesterol levels. Research studies have also shown that an increased intake of dietary fiber may be associated with a reduced risk of dying due to cardiovascular disease and cancer. Is white bread high in fiber? Is sourdough bread high in fiber? Is wheat bread high in fiber? No, white bread is not high in fiber. In fact, white bread has the least amount of fiber when compared to other types of bread. The same is true for traditional sourdough bread, as this is made from refined grains that are not high in fiber. Traditional sourdough bread contains about 1 gram of fiber per 1-ounce slice. However, whole wheat sourdough bread has a higher fiber content, containing up to 3 grams of fiber per serving. Any bread that is made of 100% whole wheat will have approximately the same amount of fiber as whole wheat sourdough bread. Just be sure the label lists whole wheat as one of the first ingredients, instead of refined wheat. If you want to start incorporating more fiber into your diet, try a loaf of bread from Wildgrain such as the slow-fermented 3-seed bread that has 3 grams of fiber per serving! What bread has the most fiber? What is the best bread for fiber? Bread made from 100% whole grains has the most fiber content when compared to other bread types. This can include rye bread, sourdough bread, sprouted grain bread, and multigrain bread so long as the bread is made entirely from whole grains. Any of these types of bread would be the best choice when deciding on a high-fiber bread option. Is low-carb bread high in fiber? Is low-carb, high-fiber bread better for you? Yes, low-carb bread is often high in dietary fiber, mostly insoluble fiber. Low-carb, high-fiber bread may be a good choice for you depending on your overall health goals. This type of bread is especially beneficial for those with diabetes because dietary fiber is indigestible and won’t cause blood sugar spikes. While low-carb bread is good for diabetics, it is not as nutritious as other types of bread and may leave you feeling hungry soon after consumption due to the lower carbohydrate and overall nutrient content. Is high-fiber bread better for weight loss? Foods that are rich in soluble fiber, including high-fiber bread, can promote weight loss as studies have shown that eating more soluble fiber can help you lose belly fat and prevent future belly fat gain. One potential explanation for this effect is that people who consume more soluble fiber have a greater diversity of gut bacteria. Soluble fiber is also a natural appetite suppressant, reducing levels of hunger hormones that the body produces. Fiber can also help to reduce your appetite by slowing the digestion of food through the gut. Is high-fiber bread better for digestion? Yes, high-fiber bread is undoubtedly better for your digestion overall. This is because fiber helps to increase the weight and size of your stool, making it easier for it to pass through your digestive system and preventing constipation. Fiber also encourages a diverse gut microbiome. A high-fiber diet has also been shown to lessen the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and lower your risk of developing diverticulitis, a serious gut condition that can result in waste becoming trapped in your digestive system. Best Bread for Acid Reflux & Heartburn

By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.      Heartburn and acid reflux can cause discomfort, pain, and frustration, especially if you are unable to find relief from your symptoms. While bread is a popular staple food for many, it can unfortunately trigger acid reflux or heartburn for some people. Thankfully, certain types of bread can lessen your likelihood of experiencing these digestive problems. Continue reading to find out which bread might be the best choice for you to reduce the symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn. Does eating bread cause acid reflux and heartburn? Why does bread give me acid reflux? Eating bread can trigger acid reflux and heartburn in some people. This is because bread, especially bread made from refined grains, can be difficult for the body to digest due to the low fiber content of these types of bread. You may also experience acid reflux and heartburn after consuming bread if you have an intolerance to gluten, a protein that is found in bread. What is the best bread for acid reflux? What is the best bread for heartburn? Any bread made entirely of whole grains is the best bread for preventing acid reflux and heartburn. Whole-grain bread has a higher fiber content than white bread, which is made from refined grains. Eating whole-grain bread in place of white bread can help with digestion and reduce the likelihood of acid reflux and heartburn. However, if you suspect you have a gluten intolerance, you’ll want to stick to gluten-free bread instead. Can GERD patients eat bread? What is the best bread for GERD? People with gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, can eat bread but should avoid bread containing refined grains, including white bread. Difficult-to-digest foods such as white bread can cause more gas and irritate the stomach. The best bread to eat for those with GERD is bread that is high in fiber or easier to digest. This includes whole grain bread, sourdough bread, and rye bread. Does bread soak up stomach acid? Food made from whole grains can help to absorb acid in the stomach, including whole grain bread. Whole grain bread is rich in fiber, and fiber can absorb liquid in the digestive system, preventing the displacement of stomach acid which in turn can reduce acid reflux symptoms. Is sourdough bread good for acid reflux or heartburn? Does sourdough bread cause acid reflux? Sourdough bread can be a great option for those with acid reflux or heartburn. Since both can be triggered by foods that are hard to digest, foods that are easier on the digestive tract are the best for those with acid reflux or heartburn. Sourdough bread is easier to digest compared to other types of bread thanks to the fermentation process used to make sourdough. The microorganisms in the dough help us with some of the digestion while the sourdough takes its time fermenting, making it easier on our bodies later on! While sourdough is generally a good option for those that experience acid reflux or heartburn after consuming white bread, it might not be the solution for everybody. Histamine found in sourdough bread may be difficult for some people to digest, potentially causing acid reflux. Is rye bread good for acid reflux? Is rye bread good for heartburn?  Rye bread can be a good bread option for acid reflux and heartburn sufferers. This is because rye bread is a good source of fiber and tends to have less gluten than other bread varieties. The high fiber and lower gluten content both help to aid digestion, reducing the possibility of acid reflux and heartburn symptoms. Is gluten-free bread good for acid reflux or heartburn?  Gluten-free bread can help to reduce acid reflux and heartburn only if the cause of these symptoms is intolerance or sensitivity to gluten. However, if gluten is not the trigger of your acid reflux or heartburn, a gluten-free diet will likely not ease your uncomfortable symptoms. If you’re unsure, try swapping white bread for 100% whole-grain bread and monitor your symptoms. If you continue to experience acid reflux or heartburn after the switch, you may want to try limiting gluten from your diet. Where can I buy healthy bread online? Bread with Butter: How Healthy?

By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.      Bread and butter - a classic pairing that never seems to get old and tastes delicious no matter the time of day. Is this one of your go-to snacks? If so, read on to learn more about the infamous bread and butter combo and whether this snack aligns in with your health goals. Why is buttered bread so good? While there is no scientific reason as to why bread and butter taste so good together, everyone seems to agree that eating butter with bread is one of life’s greatest culinary experiences. Some argue that adding butter to bread before toasting enhances the flavor of this already delicious pairing. This method allows the bread to stay crisp while butter melts into the entire slice of bread. In contrast, slathering butter on top of warm toast can result in the bread becoming soggy. Of course, this is all up to personal preference and makes for a tasty snack either way! Is eating bread with butter healthy? Is buttered bread good for you?  Eating bread with butter can be healthy when enjoyed in moderation; you can also increase the nutritional profile of this favorite snack by choosing your bread and butter wisely. For example, bread made from whole grains or whole wheat is a healthier choice compared to white bread which is made from refined grains. Sourdough bread and rye bread are two other nutritious bread options. Butter can add excessive sodium and fat to your diet, so you should make sure you’re aware of both the fat and the sodium content as well as the serving size of butter you are adding to your bread. Although it may be assumed that butter is not good for one’s health, buttered bread can be good for you when incorporated into a balanced diet. Butter is rich in calcium and has been shown to have certain health benefits, including lower risks of cancer and helping people lose or maintain weight. Is bread and butter a healthy breakfast?  Bread and butter can be a healthy breakfast depending on the type of bread and butter as well as what you choose to pair this classic combination with. Bread made from 100% whole grains, sourdough bread, and rye bread are going to be rich in nutrients and will help you feel full for longer. You can try unsalted butter instead of salted butter to reduce your sodium intake. You can also choose grass-fed butter which has been shown to have increased health benefits and reduced health risks compared to regular butter. If you’re having two slices of bread for breakfast, try swapping butter on one of the slices with peanut butter or bananas to further enhance the nutritional profile of your bread and butter breakfast. Can you eat bread with butter while trying to lose weight? Can you eat bread and butter on a diet? Yes, you absolutely can eat bread with butter while achieving your weight loss goals. The key to losing weight is to remain in a caloric deficit or to consume fewer calories than you burn in a day. One slice of white bread contains about 70 calories and a single serving of salted butter (or one tablespoon) contains about 100 calories, meaning that one slice of bread with butter contains about 170 calories. Two slices of bread with one serving of butter on each slice of bread brings the total to 340 calories. Even though there aren't too many calories in this meal alone, it probably won't fill you up for very long. To continue enjoying bread with butter while staying full for longer, you can choose a whole wheat or whole grain bread option. Studies have shown that consuming a diet rich in whole grains can help you to lose belly fat and will leave you feeling fuller, making it easier to consume fewer calories. Bread and butter can fit into any diet so long as you choose varieties that fit in with your health goals. Is bread and butter good for weight gain? Bread and butter can promote weight gain depending on how often you eat this snack and the serving size. In contrast to losing weight, gaining weight will require you to consume more calories than you burn. This can be done by eating any food in excess, including bread and butter. Increasing the amount of bread, butter, or both in your diet and the frequency with which you eat them will cause weight gain. Is bread with butter ok for diabetics? Consuming bread with butter is okay for diabetics but should be enjoyed in moderation. Bread that is lower in carbohydrates and higher in fiber is the best choice for diabetics as fiber eaten in conjunction with carbohydrates helps to prevent blood sugar spikes. For diabetics, buttery or olive oil spreads work well in place of regular butter because they taste just as good but typically have less saturated fat. What is the best bread to eat with butter? The best bread to eat with butter is your favorite type of bread! While the tastiest bread to pair with butter is completely up to personal preference, many tend to enjoy a slice of baguette bread with a spread of butter. Ciabatta bread, sourdough bread, and rye bread are some other fan favorites when it comes to choosing a bread type to enjoy with butter. Where can I buy the best fresh bread and butter online? Bread vs. Toast: Is Bread Healthier than Toast?

By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.    The choice to have a piece of bread toasted or untoasted usually comes down to what taste and texture you desire. Toasting bread is a chemical reaction, meaning that some of the molecules (carbohydrates) break apart and the water content is reduced. Due to this chemical reaction, toasting bread might be associated with potential health benefits and could also make bread more easily digestible. Is toast better for you than bread? Is it healthier to eat toast rather than bread? Toast has been shown to have a lower glycemic index than bread that is untoasted. The glycemic index of food is a measure of how a food impacts blood sugar – the higher the number the higher blood sugar will spike after eating that food. Although the difference isn’t huge, toast has fewer carbohydrates than bread due to the chemical reaction that occurs.  On the other hand, if bread is toasted until it is burnt, a potentially carcinogenic compound called acrylamide can form. This compound can cause health problems if eaten too often, so if you burn your toast, throw it out and make a new slice. Is toast better for your stomach than bread? Why is toast better than bread for diarrhea? Why should you eat toast when you are sick? Because the water content of bread is reduced by toasting it, toasted bread adds bulk to your stool. This causes digestion to slow down. Toast is a main component of the BRAT (banana, rice, apple sauce, toast) diet that helps slow down digestion and fight diarrhea through bulking your stool.  Does toast have different nutritional value than bread? Although the chemical reaction when toasting bread does break down carbohydrates and reduce the water content of bread, the nutritional value of toast does not differ significantly from bread. However, the scope of nutritional value does change depending on how toasted the piece of bread gets. If a slice of bread is lightly to moderately toasted – the way most people eat toast – the changes in nutritional value are insignificant. However, if bread is burnt in the toaster, the change in calories may be noteworthy – but the toast will also be inedible.  It is important to note that most studies on the nutritional value of bread vs. toast are conducted in white bread. Is toast with peanut butter healthy? Is toast with butter healthy? Because toast is mainly carbohydrate based, and peanut butter has fat and protein, toast with peanut butter creates a healthy balance of nutrients. The health benefits will multiply if whole-grain toast is used, as this will also give you a dose of fiber which, along with protein, helps keep you fuller for longer periods of time. If you are going to top your toast with just butter – which only consists of fats – be sure to make it a slice of whole-grain bread too. Butter doesn't have protein like its counterpart peanut butter, but the fiber in the whole-grain bread will give you the same benefits no matter what it’s topped with.  Is toasted bread healthy for diabetics? Is toast better than bread for diabetics? Toast has been shown to have a lower glycemic index than bread that is untoasted. Although the difference isn’t huge, toast has fewer carbohydrates than bread due to the chemical reaction that occurs. Diabetics should opt for lower glycemic index foods when possible – it is important for diabetics to understand how food will impact their blood sugar in order to keep the condition under control. Is toasted bread good for weight loss? Is toast better than bread for weight loss? Toast is likely slightly better for weight loss than bread. There are numerous studies that show the association between a lack of blood sugar control and weight gain. Because toast has a lower glycemic index it could play a role in assisting with better blood sugar control and ultimately weight loss.  Where can I buy the best fresh bread online?
