What’s Better: Bread vs. Tortilla vs. Pita vs. Wrap?

By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.    One thing that can be agreed upon is that whether in the form of tortilla, pita, focaccia, or a wrap, it’s always bread, and always delicious. Flour is the star of each of these delicious snacks and each has their own unique health benefits. Which is healthier to eat: bread or tortilla or pita or wrap? Each of the mentioned types of bread has benefits when it comes to your health. Let's start with bread, which is often demonized by the health community. Although bread is high in carbs, certain varieties, such as whole grain bread, are also high in fiber – which has many health benefits. In addition, the flour used in bread is often enriched with important B-complex vitamins to boost the nutritional value and help prevent deficiencies. To get all the health benefits of bread, stick to the whole-grain varieties.  Tortillas come in two forms, corn and flour. Corn tortillas are a good source of fiber because they are considered whole grain – just like whole grain bread – and magnesium, which plays a vital role in brain, heart, and muscle health. They are also lower in carbs, calories, and fat, than flour tortillas. Flour tortillas do also have benefits as they provide iron. Corn tortillas are a good alternative for those who have gluten intolerances or allergies, as corn is gluten-free. In addition, corn tortillas are usually much smaller in size (6 in) compared to flour tortillas (8-10 in), giving a built in sense of portion control. If you are looking for a healthier tortilla option, opt for corn.  Wraps are often thought as the “healthier” alternative to sandwiches. However, the color and name of wraps is often misleading, so it is important to read the nutrition label and ingredients. Whole-wheat wraps generally contain more nutrition than plain white flour wraps, but it is important to scan and make sure hydrogenated oils and other trans fats are not part of the ingredients. Colorful red and green wraps do not offer any nutritional benefits, and are often made with only small amounts of tomato or spinach powder for coloring and flavor. The nutritional content of a wrap depends on its ingredients, not just how it looks. Pitas are similar to a wrap, but are a little thicker. Pita breads are relatively low in fat content, and have a similar protein and carbohydrate content to a slice of bread. These flat breads also contain calcium and iron, and are considered to be low sodium foods. Just as with other whole-grain bread options, the fiber content can aid in digestion and lowering blood sugar.   Which has the most carbs: tortilla vs. wrap vs. bread vs. pita? Which has the most calories: wrap vs. tortilla vs. bread vs. pita? When the nutritional content of each type of bread is compared, they are very similar across the board, varying by only 1-3 grams (g) of each nutrient.  Nutritional Content Whole-Wheat Bread Corn Tortilla Whole Wheat Wrap Pita Calories 92 96 110 90 Carbohydrates 17g 20g 22g 17g Protein 3g 2.5g 4g 4g Fat 2g 1.3g 2g 1g Fiber 2g 3g 5g 2g   Which is the best for weight loss and dieting: wrap or pita or tortilla or bread? Can you still eat bread, pita, tortillas, and wraps when trying to lose weight? When trying to lose weight or diet, it is important to focus on the protein and fiber content in the wrap, pita, tortilla, or bread you are consuming. Sticking with whole-wheat or whole-grain options will allow for higher fiber and higher protein. Fiber has a range of benefits including promoting weight loss, lowering blood sugar, fighting constipation, boosting heart health, lowering cholesterol, and feeding the “good” bacteria in our guts. High protein diets also have benefits for weight loss and metabolic health, so sneaking in extra protein in a carbohydrate source is always helpful. The main focus when losing weight and dieting does not need to be about cutting out entire food groups, but instead making smarter choices in terms of the type (opting for whole grains), and portion of the foods we love. What’s the difference between tortilla vs. wrap? Which is healthier: wrap or tortilla? A tortilla is a flat bread that is unleavened (does not use yeast or a chemical leavening agent) and uses corn or wheat as its flour source. Tortillas do not contain any spices or flavors and are often smaller in size. A wrap, on the other hand, is a soft bread made with a dough that contains yeast. Wraps are usually larger and contain spices and flavors. Compared to a corn tortilla, a whole wheat wrap has higher protein and fiber content, and a similar fat content.  Which is healthier: bread or wrap? Wraps contain more carbohydrates but also contain more fiber. One slice of whole-wheat bread and one whole-wheat wrap also contain a similar protein content and contain the same amount of fat. As long as you are choosing whole-grain options, whichever you prefer to eat is what you should choose.  Which is healthier: bread or tortilla? Is bread more fattening than tortilla? Bread and corn tortillas have a very similar nutrient profile. However, if you are choosing a flour tortilla, to get the most health benefit, be sure to choose one made with whole-wheat flour rather than refined white flour. Flour tortillas do also usually contain a higher fat content, so be wary of that as well. The most important consideration when choosing the carbohydrate you want to enjoy is that it consists of whole-grains, in order to get the most health benefits.  Where can I buy fresh bread online? What is Healthier: Pizza or Pasta?

By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.     Pizza and pasta may be in a deadset tie for tastiness, but which is healthier? Each carb heavy delight has its own benefits and drawbacks, but if you are craving Italian flavors and want to keep your calories in check, which one should you choose? What is the difference between pizza vs. pasta nutrition?  Pizza from a restaurant can run you up to 300 calories a slice – more depending on the toppings chosen. This can quickly eat away at the recommended average of around 2000 to 2500 calories a day, not to mention the amount of saturated fat and sodium. But pasta from a restaurant can rack up the calories too – an order of fettuccine alfredo at Olive Garden amounts to around 1,220 calories and 1,350 mg of sodium. Creamy sauces and cheese can make any pasta dish less healthy.  Here is a quick snapshot comparing the nutritional content of a slice of cheese pizza versus a cup of cooked spaghetti with no sauce: Nutritional Content Slice of Cheese Pizza One Cup of Cooked Spaghetti Calories 285 220 Protein 12g 8g Carbohydrates 36g 43g Fat 10.4g 1.3g Does pasta or pizza have more carbs? Does pizza or pasta have more calories? One slice of cheese pizza has fewer carbs than one cup of cooked spaghetti – 36 grams in a typical cheese pizza versus 43 grams in one cup of pasta. However, pizza has more calories than pasta, 285 in a slice of pizza versus 220 in a cup of cooked pasta. This is attributed to the fact that the fat content in a slice of cheese pizza is much higher – almost 9 grams higher – than in a cup of cooked pasta. However, this analysis does not include any additional toppings that may be added to the pizza or sauces mixed with pasta. Is pizza healthier than pasta? Is pasta healthier than pizza? Pizza and pasta are similar in terms of nutritional value. Neither pasta or pizza would be labeled as healthy, but can be included in a healthy lifestyle in limited amounts.    Although the fat content in a slice of cheese pizza is higher than in a cup of cooked pasta, this does not mean that pizza is healthier than pasta. Pasta is almost never eaten plain, and often has toppings such as creamy sauces and cheese added in. For example, a two cup serving of fettuccine alfredo has 660 calories, 10 grams of fat, 88 grams of carbohydrates, and 18 grams of protein. This is similar to the nutrition of around 2.5 slices of cheese pizza, which is a more reasonable portion. However, if toppings like pepperoni are added to pizza, the calorie content will also go up and the nutritional value can decline. Which is better for weight loss: pizza or pasta? With such a similar nutritional profile, pizza and pasta can be considered equal for weight loss. It is important to remember that whether eating pasta or pizza, portion size is key for weight loss - you can eat pizza and pasta while trying to lose weight if you are mindful of the amount you are eating!   In addition, when focused on weight loss, it is important to eat whole-grain flours, which increases the fiber and protein content of your food. Making pizza or pasta at home and opting for whole-grain flours for the dough is a great option. You can also buy whole-grain pasta and pizza dough already made in most grocery stores. It is also important to focus on the toppings – stick with more vegetables, leaner proteins and less creamy sauces and cheeses on both pizza and pasta.     What is the difference between pasta vs pizza flour? Is pasta vs pizza dough the same? Pizza flour and pasta flour are not the same. Pasta is generally made from semolina flour, whereas all-purpose flour is used to make pizza dough. This is because pasta dough requires a lower gluten content than pizza. In addition, pizza dough contains yeast because it must be leavened, whereas pasta dough does not.    What is the difference between pizza sauce vs. pasta sauce vs. marinara sauce vs. tomato sauce? Which sauce is healthiest? Pizza sauce, pasta sauce, and marinara sauce are all types of tomato sauce. Pizza sauce is made with uncooked tomatoes that have been pureed, and pasta sauce is made with cooked tomatoes blended with garlic, herbs, and spices – also referred to as a marinara. Because pizza cooks in the oven, putting a pasta sauce – such as marinara – on a pizza is redundant, as you are cooking the sauce twice which changes the overall flavor profile. And vice versa with pasta – adding uncooked sauce to already cooked noodles will make the dish seem unfinished as the pasta sauce is meant to already have the flavors developed when added. Both types of tomato based sauce have similar nutrient profiles and are considered to be much healthier than cream based sauces.    Where can I buy the best fresh pizza and pasta to make at home? What’s Better: Bread vs. Cake vs. Muffin vs. Cupcake?

By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.    Sweet breads, cake, muffins, and cupcakes are all delicious treats that take some finesse to make right. But what is the difference between bread and cake, or muffins and cupcakes? It may be hard to pinpoint the differences between these baked goods based on their ingredients alone, and instead one needs to consider the method by which these ingredients are combined.  What’s the difference between bread vs. cake?  Is cake considered a sweet bread? Do cake and bread have the same ingredients? When most people think of bread they think of everyday staples like white, wheat and rye, whereas cakes are thought of as a treat for special occasions, and served as dessert. You may be inclined to think that bread is savory and cake is sweet, but is the distinction really so simple? In order to better understand the differences between cake and bread, it is important to understand the categories of each, and where the ambiguity exists.  Traditional breads are leavened with yeast – these include what we typically think of when bread comes to mind, whites, wheats, and ryes. Base ingredients in traditional breads include flour, active dry yeast, water, and a pinch of salt or sugar. Quick breads on the other hand are more similar to cakes in that they use a leavening agent such as baking sodas – these include banana breads and zucchini breads. These base ingredients for quick breads and cakes are the same – flour, leavening agent, eggs, fat, and a liquid – despite the addition of sugar in cake.  Cake is a kind of quick bread, but is much lighter in texture, always sweet, and often frosted or decorated. And although the definition of quick breads muddies the water in terms of the differences between cake and bread, traditional bread and cake are very different. The primary difference between bread and cake is that yeast is used as the leavening agent, but other ingredients including sugar, eggs, milk, and fat also lead to differences in texture between the two. Another way cakes differ from bread is that solid fat is creamed with the sugar, creating a much softer texture than bread.  What’s the difference between a muffin and bread? Which is healthier, bread or muffins? Although muffins are considered to be bread, they fall under the quick bread category and utilize baking soda as a leavening agent rather than yeast. The term muffin typically refers to an individual sized quick bread, and can be sweet or savory. In terms of health, depending on the recipe used, bread will likely provide more protein and less fat content than muffins, but won’t satisfy a sweet craving.  What’s the difference between a muffin and cake? What’s healthier, cake or muffin? Are muffins just small cakes? The term muffin typically refers to an individual sized quick bread, and can be sweet or savory. However, muffins are a different type of quick bread than cake, as muffins have melted (or liquid) fat instead of creaming the solid fat and sugar together, as in cakes. This creates a more moist texture. Muffins and cake are very similar in ingredients, but muffins will have less fat content and sugar than cake due to a lack of frosting, and the use of liquid oils that are usually plant based instead of solid fats (such as butter), that are usually animal based and higher in saturated fats.  What’s the difference between a cupcake and cake? Which is healthier, cake or cupcakes? Are cupcakes just small cakes? The main difference between a cake and cupcake is the size. Cupcakes are much smaller, and meant to be consumed by one person whereas cakes are large and meant to be consumed by a group. Any cake can be turned into a cupcake by adjusting the ratio of ingredients, which is why they can be thought of as mini-cakes. Cupcakes and cakes both use baking soda as a leavening agent and the creaming method, where solid fat is creamed with sugar to create the flavor and texture known of both.  What’s the difference between a cupcake and a muffin? Which is healthier, muffins or cupcakes? The difference between cupcakes and muffins comes down to their mixing method and the composition of the batter. Cupcakes are beaten for a longer time, and generally have more sugar and fat than muffins, along with the fact that solid fat is used instead of liquid fat. Muffins are mixed by combining the “wet” and “dry” ingredients after they have been combined in separate bowls, and are more likely to include less sugar, more fruit and whole grains, and can be savory. As there is less fat, more fruits and whole grains, and less sugar in muffins, they are likely a healthier treat than a cupcake.  Where can I buy bread and treats fresh online? Sourdough bread can be enjoyed while on a diet since it can be made with a variety of ingredients to suit your dietary needs. Simply check the nutritional label to ensure that the bread is compatible with your diet. What bread can you eat on a Mediterranean diet? Is sourdough bread allowed on the Mediterranean diet?  Any bread that is made from whole wheat, whole grains, sprouts, and sourdough is recommended while on a Mediterranean diet. You will want to avoid bread made from refined grains, such as white bread if you are following this diet. This is because bread made from refined grains is not as healthy and contains fewer nutrients than bread made from whole grains and sourdough. What kind of bread is keto-friendly? Can I eat one slice of bread on keto? Can you eat sourdough bread on a keto diet? Keto-friendly bread is going to include any bread that is low in carbohydrates since the keto diet emphasizes consuming minimal carbs. Specifically for this need, there are several low-carb bread options on the market that are suitable for a keto diet. You can eat a slice of regular bread while on a keto diet, however, you will want to keep in mind that a typical slice of bread contains about 20 grams of carbohydrates and the keto diet recommends consuming a maximum of 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. If you love sourdough bread and you’re on a keto diet, you’re in luck! Sourdough bread is a relatively low-carb bread option, typically containing just 10 grams of carbohydrates or half the amount of carbohydrates of a white slice of bread. This makes sourdough bread a great keto-friendly choice. Is bread vegetarian? What’s the best bread for a vegetarian diet? All bread is vegetarian as it does not contain animal products. This makes any bread suitable for a vegetarian diet. While all bread is considered vegetarian, it is important to note that not all bread is considered vegan. This is due to additives in some types of bread that could be animal derived, like dairy or eggs. Is bread vegan? Can you eat bread on a vegan diet? A lot of bread varieties are considered vegan, but not all bread is vegan-friendly. Some bread types include added ingredients beyond flour, water, salt, and yeast. These added ingredients such as sweeteners, eggs, or fats, can be derived from animals and would make the bread not vegan. Bread that is usually free of animal products and safe for a vegan diet includes sourdough bread, pita bread, Ezekiel bread, ciabatta, baguettes, and focaccia. What bread is the best on a plant-based diet? A plant-based diet means opting for as many healthy, whole, and unprocessed foods as possible. Any bread made from whole grains is the best option as it is the least processed and most nutritious type of bread. Other great choices for healthy bread varieties are sprouted grain bread, sourdough bread, flaxseed bread, and buckwheat bread. What is the best bread for a low-carb diet? Can you eat any bread on a low-carb diet? The best bread for a low-carb diet will be similar to the best bread for a keto diet. Look for bread with no more than 10 grams of carbohydrates per slice. These breads are typically labeled as low in carbohydrates on the packaging. Sourdough bread is another low-carb bread option, often containing half of the carbohydrates found in one slice of white bread. While these breads are best suited for a low-carb diet, you can eat any bread as long as you limit your portion size and keep track of how many carbohydrates you consume throughout the day. Are Brownies Healthy or Unhealthy?

By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.      Warm, fudgy, gooey brownies that are fresh out of the oven – is there a more satisfying treat? Let’s all be honest, the only thing stopping us from eating sweets all day is the little voice in our heads telling us how unhealthy it is. While that *can* be true, some sweet treats such as brownies may actually provide some health benefits. Keep reading to learn more about brownies and how they stack up against other sweets. Is a brownie healthy? Is a brownie unhealthy? Traditional chocolate brownies are not able to be classified as simply healthy or unhealthy. Since brownies are not nutritionally dense, they are not usually regarded as a healthy food. However, brownies do have some health benefits that might be surprising due to their chocolate content. Chocolate is a source of antioxidants and has been found to help lower blood pressure and increase good cholesterol levels.   How often should you eat brownies? The frequency with which you should eat browniesGo to Fudge brownies depends on your overall diet and your individual health goals. The American Heart Association suggests limiting added sugars to about 30 grams per day. This suggestion could guide how often you should be eating brownies based on how much sugar you consume in other foods throughout the day. For reference, an average brownie contains approximately 15 grams of sugar or half of the recommended daily sugar intake. Brownie nutrition: Are brownies high in fat? How many carbs are in a brownie?  Let’s dive into some of the key macronutrients that are found in a traditional average-sized brownieGo to Fudge brownies. The majority of a brownie’s calories come from its fat and carbohydrate content. However, a single brownie is not very high in either, with one brownie containing about 7 grams of fat and 12 grams of carbohydrates. Can you eat brownies while on a diet? Will one brownie ruin my diet? Can I lose weight and still eat brownies? You absolutely can eat browniesGo to Fudge brownies while on a diet. Nutritionists actually advise indulging in sweets while on a diet – in moderation, of course. It is much easier to maintain a diet where you continue to enjoy your favorite treats, instead of restricting or eliminating them entirely. That being said, one brownie will not ruin your diet and you can still lose weight while eating brownies. The key to losing weight is burning more calories than you consume. To remain in a calorie deficit, it is suggested to allocate 100 to 150 calories each day for dessert. This might mean consuming a smaller brownie or cutting an average brownie in half. This way you can still enjoy brownies while on a diet and achieving your weight loss goals. Are brownies healthier than cookies? Is a cookie or brownie better for you? With the many varieties of cookies available, the answer as to whether browniesGo to Fudge brownies are healthier than cookies is not so cut-and-dry. For the sake of this discussion, we’ll compare brownies with a classic cookie variety – chocolate chip cookies. One medium-sized chocolate chip cookie contains about 80 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 9 grams of carbohydrates, and 11 grams of sugar. This makes brownies and chocolate chip cookies very similar in fat, carbohydrate, and sugar content although chocolate chip cookies contain less of each nutrient. One chocolate chip cookie also has considerably fewer calories than a brownie, with the average brownie containing about 130 calories. Considering that brownies and chocolate chip cookies have comparable nutritional profiles, neither is better for you than the other. Are brownies healthier than cake? Is cake or a brownie better for you? It is difficult to compare brownies to cake but to make it simpler, we’ll take a look at the nutritional profile of chocolate cake. One piece of chocolate cake with frosting contains about 250 calories, 13 grams of fat, 25 grams of sugar, and 34 grams of carbohydrates. This makes chocolate cake higher in calories, fat, sugar, and carbohydrates. Therefore, brownies are better for you than chocolate cake. Of course, these numbers will vary based on the ingredients used to make both brownies and cake so be sure to check the nutrition label whenever deciding between two dessert options.    Is it bad to eat brownies every day? Is it OK to eat a brownie for breakfast? It isn’t bad to eat brownies every day so long as you are mindful of the portion size and how brownies fit into your overall diet. If you’d like to indulge in the chocolatey goodness of a brownie daily, be sure to monitor your daily sugar and calorie intake to maintain a balanced and healthy diet. This means that if a brownie is calling your name first thing in the morning, you can certainly have it, but you should be sure to eat other more nutritious foods with your breakfast as well to keep your body fueled all day long. Multigrain Bread: Healthy or Unhealthy

By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.      You’ve probably heard that multigrain bread is good for you, but do you know where it stands when stacked against other bread types? In this article, we’ll let you know how to choose the healthiest multigrain bread, how multigrain bread compares to other bread types, and whether multigrain bread can help you to lose weight. Is multigrain bread healthy? Can I eat multigrain bread every day? Multigrain bread is healthiest when it is made from whole grains. Since multigrain bread can be made from both refined grains (white bread) and whole grains, you’ll want to make sure the multigrain bread you’re consuming is made entirely from whole grains for the most health benefits. Since multigrain bread made from 100% whole grains is the most nutritious bread option, be sure to check the nutrition label on your multigrain bread for whole wheat flour as the first ingredient instead of wheat flour. Eating whole grains has a host of nutritional benefits when compared to refined grains such as lowering cholesterol and insulin levels, which can help to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. You can eat multigrain bread daily, but like with any other food, you’ll want to watch portion size and pair it with other healthy foods to create a complete and balanced meal. What are the disadvantages of multigrain bread? While multigrain bread has many benefits, the high fiber content that can be found in some multigrain bread may cause gastrointestinal upset, especially if you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). You might experience diarrhea or bloating as a side effect of eating bread containing whole grains. Multigrain bread also tends to be high in fructan, a sugar that can aggravate digestive disorders, such as IBS. Is multigrain bread healthier than whole wheat bread? Which is better, whole wheat vs. multigrain bread? Whole wheat bread and multigrain bread have similar nutritional profiles when made entirely of whole grains. This is because both types of bread have the same health benefits due to both containing the whole grain kernel as opposed to refined grains that have been milled or stripped of certain nutrients that are found in the whole grain. However, if multigrain bread is made from a combination of whole and refined grains, whole wheat bread will always be healthier as it must be made from 100% whole grains. Is multigrain bread healthier than white bread? Which is better, white bread vs. multigrain bread? Since multigrain bread typically has more fiber and a lower glycemic index than white bread, it is generally healthier than white bread. Multigrain bread has a tendency to be more nutrient-dense because it can contain whole grains, whereas white bread is always made from refined grains. Compared to bread made from refined grains, bread containing whole-grains offers greater nutritional benefits.   Is multigrain bread healthier than sourdough bread? Which is better, sourdough vs. multigrain bread? When made entirely from whole grains, multigrain bread is usually healthier than sourdough bread. However, sourdough bread may be more nutritious than multigrain bread if the multigrain bread contains refined grains. This is due to the slow fermentation process used to make sourdough bread that creates a nutrient-dense bread. To get the benefits of both whole grains and sourdough, you can try a multigrain sourdough bread, such as Wildgrain’s sourdough 7-grain loaf. Is multigrain bread healthy for weight loss? Can I eat multigrain bread and lose weight? Multigrain bread can be healthy for weight loss. When compared to refined grains, studies have shown that eating whole grains can help to reduce belly fat. Make sure to look for multigrain bread that is 100% whole grain if you want to benefit the most from it while trying to lose weight. The higher fiber content in multigrain bread can also contribute to weight loss by making you feel fuller for longer. Looking for healthy breads? Are Baguettes Healthy or Unhealthy?

Best Bread for Garlic Bread

By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.    No matter if you are having spaghetti, lasagna, or baked ziti, it is likely you will be looking to complete your meal with a crispy slice of garlic bread. Garlic bread is a perfect accompaniment to soak up the extra red sauce on your plate – you can’t beat a slice of bread infused with buttery garlic flavor. This delicacy is also often infused with cheese and herbs. But is there one specific type of bread that makes the best slice of this treat?  How do you make garlic bread? What types of bread can you use for garlic bread? A basic recipe for garlic bread starts by splitting a loaf of bread in half lengthwise, similar to how you split a roll for a sandwich. Butter, garlic, and parsley are combined in a bowl and adjusted to taste. The garlic mixture is then spread across the open face of the bread, which is then placed into a hot oven (around 400 degrees) for 10 minutes, or until the butter has melted. Just as you can change the butter mixture to satisfy your taste buds, you can also add extra cheeses or other toppings to your liking.  Is garlic bread made from Italian bread?  Garlic bread can be made from Italian bread. Any bread with a thick crust – such as ciabatta – are favorites for delicious garlic bread. Ciabatta is a good choice for garlic bread as it can be easily cut horizontally, and provides an open crumb with a soft interior texture, perfect for the garlic butter. And after toasting, ciabatta garlic bread still has that great crunchy exterior characteristic of excellent garlic bread.  Can you use French bread or baguette for garlic bread? What is garlic baguette made of? French bread is a great choice for garlic bread as well. French bread has a classic soft interior, with a flaky, crispy crust, similar to ciabatta. Baguettes can also be used for garlic bread, but have a crunchier texture than Italian bread and French bread. Garlic baguette is made the same way as garlic bread, it is just made with a French baguette instead of a loaf. Often, to best prepare garlic baguette, cut the baguette into slices instead of cutting the bread in half lengthwise before applying the garlic-butter mixture.  What’s the difference between garlic bread vs Texas toast? Is Texas toast the same as garlic bread? Typically, garlic bread is made with breads that have a hard crust (e.g. French bread, ciabatta, baguette). Texas toast is made by spreading butter on both sides of a slide of bread and broiling or grilling it until it is light brown – sometimes garlic is added to the butter as well. Although made in a similar fashion to garlic bread, Texas toast has a soft crust and soft fluffy interior, more similar to sandwich bread you would buy at the store than the crunchy breads used in garlic bread.  What is the best bread for garlic bread? French breads and Italian breads top the list for the best bread for garlic bread, but the best choice between these comes down to personal preference. For example, ciabatta is a flat Italian bread with a larger crumb (bigger holes) but still with a crunchy crust. French bread and baguettes are longer and thinner with chewy texture and a crispy crunchy crust. You cannot go wrong with either ciabatta or baguette for garlic bread! How do you heat up garlic bread in the oven? What are directions to bake frozen garlic bread? Made fresh, garlic bread can be heated in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for around 10 minutes, or until the butter melts. Homemade garlic bread can also be frozen before you bake it,  and lasts up to 3 months in the freezer – but you can also buy already prepared garlic bread at the store. There is no need to thaw frozen garlic bread, it can go straight from the freezer to the oven. The oven should be heated to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the garlic bread butter side up on a baking sheet and bake for around 5 minutes, or until the butter melts and the edges are golden.  Where can I buy the best bread for garlic bread online? What’s Better: Pasta vs. Noodles vs. Spaghetti vs. Egg Noodles?

By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries.    Noodles, pasta, spaghetti – all these words probably make you think of a delectable meal smothered in sauce. While many of us tend to love a good pasta or noodle-based dish, do you know what the difference is between different types of noodles and pasta? In this article, we’ll describe how pasta, noodles, egg noodles, and spaghetti differ, as well as which option is the healthiest. What is the difference between pasta vs. noodles vs. spaghetti vs. egg noodles?  The difference between pasta and noodles lies in the ingredients and processing used to make each. Pasta is made from a dough containing durum wheat and water, while noodles are made with water and flour that has been milled from common wheat. It’s important to note that pasta is always made with wheat, while noodles can be made from many different ingredients besides wheat, such as buckwheat, rice, beans, and quinoa. Once the dough is made, pasta undergoes an extruding process that creates varying shapes, whereas noodles go through a sheeting process. The sheeting process involves the noodle dough being rolled flat into a sheet before being pulled through a cutting machine that slices the dough into single strands. Spaghetti and egg noodles describe variations of pasta and noodles. Spaghetti is a type of pasta that is characterized by its long, stringy shape. As the name suggests, egg noodles are a type of noodle that is made by incorporating eggs (more egg than other noodle types) into the wheat flour-based dough. What is the health difference between noodles vs. spaghetti vs. pasta vs. egg noodles, e.g. for calories and carbs? A single serving of Pasta, such as spaghetti, contains 43 grams of carbohydrates and 221 calories. The nutritional profile of noodles differs depending on what is used to make the noodles. For example, one serving of rice noodles contains 44 grams of carbohydrates and 192 calories, whereas one serving of egg noodles contains 40 grams of carbohydrates and 221 calories. As you can see, traditional pasta, rice noodles, and egg noodles all have about the same amount of carbohydrates, while rice noodles contain slightly fewer calories. Are pasta and noodles the same thing? Do pasta and noodles taste the same? Pasta and noodles are not the same thing. The main differences between pasta and noodles are the ingredients used to make the dough and the process used to cut the dough. Depending on the texture of the noodle, you might think noodles taste similar to pasta. However, the preparation method used to make a pasta or noodle dish can greatly change the taste. While pasta is often boiled and covered in an Italian sauce, noodles are staples of Asian dishes, frequently pan-fried, stir-fried, or added to soups. Is spaghetti considered a noodle? Is spaghetti a type of pasta? Since the shape of spaghetti is similar to noodles, you may hear spaghetti and noodles used interchangeably. However, as defined by the National Pasta Association, a noodle must contain at least 5.5% egg content. Spaghetti does not match this criterion, and is therefore not considered a noodle. Similarly, the National Pasta Association defined pasta as being made with durum wheat and water. Since spaghetti is made with these ingredients and does not contain eggs, it is a type of pasta. What is healthier: pasta or noodles? Are egg noodles healthier than pasta? Some noodle varieties are healthier than pasta. This is because noodles can be made from a wide array of ingredients. Soba noodles, which are made from buckwheat flour, contain fewer calories and carbohydrates than other noodle varieties and pasta. Soba noodles are also high in protein and fiber as well as a great source of manganese. Egg noodles are not healthier than pasta, since they are high in carbohydrates and calories, just like pasta. The overall nutritional profile of egg noodles is very similar to that of pasta. Can I substitute egg noodles for pasta in a recipe? Can I substitute pasta for egg noodles? Yes, you absolutely can substitute noodles for pasta, and vice versa, in a recipe. While it is up to personal preference, note that egg noodle recipes typically suggest cooking the noodles until they are soft and tender, while pasta recipes recommend cooking the pasta al dente (slightly firm). Either way, if you’re in a pinch or just looking to try something different, you can’t go wrong with swapping pasta and egg noodles in your favorite recipe! Can you still eat bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes when trying to lose weight? Yes, you can still enjoy bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes while maintaining your weight loss goals. The key to losing weight is to be in a calorie deficit or consuming fewer calories than you burn. This means you will want to be aware of the number of calories in each of your meals. To help with this, opt for smaller portions and try swapping refined carbohydrates with those made from whole grains. Foods made from whole grains will keep you fuller for longer, helping you to stay on track with your daily calorie and weight loss goals. Which is healthier: pasta or rice? Pasta and rice are very similar nutritionally, with each containing approximately 30 grams of carbohydrates and less than 1 gram of fat and sugar. The main differences between refined (white) pasta and white rice are in the amount of calories, fiber, and protein in each. Pasta contains more calories, more fiber, and more protein than rice. However, many healthier varieties of pasta and rice are available that are more nutritious than their refined counterparts. Which is healthier: bread or rice? When looking at the nutritional content of a single serving of bread and rice, bread may be considered the healthier option. This is due to bread containing fewer calories and carbohydrates than rice. However, rice does contain more protein, vitamins, and minerals compared to bread. If you’re looking for a healthier alternative to white bread and white rice, try opting for multigrain bread, sourdough bread, rye bread, and brown rice. All of these options contain more nutrients than traditional bread and rice choices. Where can I buy fresh pasta online?
