Are English Muffins Healthy or Unhealthy?
By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. English muffins have long been a popular option for breakfast, whether eaten with butter, jam, or as part of an egg sandwich. While you might be familiar with English muffins, have you ever wondered how healthy they are? Read on to learn more about which types of English muffins are the healthiest and whether they can fit into your nutritional needs and goals. Are English muffins healthy to eat? Are English muffins with butter healthy? English muffins are round and flat yeast-leavened breads made with bread flour, water, yeast, salt, butter, cornmeal, and canola oil. Since gaining popularity, English muffins now come in different varieties, such as cinnamon, raisin, and blueberry. An English muffin isn’t healthy on its own as it does not provide a balanced meal by itself, but it can still be part of a healthy diet. English muffins can be rich in fiber and several important nutrients, such as selenium, manganese, and B vitamins. While it might taste yummy to add butter to an English muffin, butter adds little nutritional value while increasing fat and sugar content, so should be avoided or used in moderation. Are English muffins healthy for weight loss or while on a diet? What’s the best English muffin for weight loss? English muffins can be enjoyed while maintaining weight loss goals or while on a diet. Since it is critical to consider calories burned versus calories consumed when trying to lose weight, it is important to note the calories in a typical English muffin. A regular sandwich-sized English muffin usually contains around 200 calories, making them a good breakfast option to maintain a low-calorie diet. You should also pay attention to other nutritional facts on a food label when it comes to weight loss goals. Some English muffin varieties contain added sugar, which has been shown to be linked to increased appetite and weight gain. When opting for a healthier choice, make sure you choose English muffins that do not contain any added sugar. Whole wheat English muffins are also great options for weight loss as they contain more fiber, more whole grains, less calories, and less sugar than other varieties. Are English muffins healthy for diabetics? What’s the best English muffin for diabetics? English muffins can be a great choice for those with diabetes. It is advised that diabetics stay away from processed foods or foods containing excessive salt, added sugars, and saturated fats. Since English muffins have low fat and sodium levels, and certain varieties even have zero added sugar, English muffins incorporate well into a diabetic diet. Additionally, whole wheat English muffins are the best for diabetics as they have a lower glycemic index, higher fiber content, and lower sugar content when compared to other English muffin varieties. Are English muffins healthier than bread? Are English muffins more fattening than bread? English muffins tend to be a little healthier than bread since English muffins have less carbohydrates, fats, and sugar than bread. While bread does contain slightly more fat when compared to English muffins, both options have 1 gram or less of total fat. Which is healthier: a bagel or an English muffin? English muffins are healthier options than plain bagels, since English muffins contain less carbohydrates, sodium, calories, and sugar than bagels. Similar to whole wheat English muffins, the nutritional value of a bagel can be increased by opting for a whole wheat bagel. Are English muffins a healthy snack? English muffins can be eaten as a well-balanced and healthy snack. Since English muffins are low in calories and fat, they can be a great option for a snack food. To up the nutritional value of an English muffin snack, choose a whole wheat English muffin and pair it with fruit or an egg. Which types of English muffins are the healthiest? English muffins made from whole grains or English muffins with no added sugar are the healthiest options, given that these options have increased nutritional value. Whole wheat English muffins contain more fiber, less calories, and less sugar than other English muffin varieties. Whole wheat English muffins also fit well into different diets, including diabetic and weight loss diets. Where can I buy the best English muffins online? Learn moreAre Croissants Healthy or Unhealthy?
By Dr. Jorge, Ph.D. Wildgrain is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. Most of us can agree that the buttery taste of a croissant that flakes off in your mouth is heavenly. You might also be wondering if that delicious croissant is healthy for you and if it can fit into your lifestyle. This article will look at the nutritional value of croissants and whether they are considered healthy. What’s in a croissant? Is a croissant unhealthy? Croissants are flaky pastries that are typically made with butter, flour, sugar, eggs, salt, water, yeast, and milk. There are also varieties that contain sweet or savory fillings, such as chocolate or cheese. The nutritional value of a croissant varies based on the type, but these buttery pastries are typically high in calories, fat, and carbohydrates. While this does not make croissants healthy, croissants can still be a part of a balanced meal by combining them with fruit, vegetables, nut butter, or eggs. Are croissants high in fat? The large amount of butter used in croissants does make croissants high in saturated fat, with typically-sized butter croissants containing 8 to 12 grams of saturated fat. The high fat content in croissants is due to lamination. Lamination requires a certain amount of fat in order to succeed and is what creates those thin and flaky layers that make up a croissant. Are croissants healthy for weight loss? Can you eat croissants while on a diet? When focused on weight loss goals, it is important to keep in mind calories consumed versus calories burned. Croissants can contain between 200 to 500 calories per croissant. This means that when eaten in moderation, yes you can eat croissants even if you are on a diet and are focused on weight loss. By reviewing nutritional information (calories, fat, carbs) and choosing a type of croissant that matches your preferences, you can incorporate croissants into your diet plan so that it fits your lifestyle and goals. Are croissants bad for cholesterol? If you’re watching your cholesterol levels, you generally want to stay away from foods high in saturated fats. Consuming too much saturated fat can raise low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels in the blood. Croissants can raise these LDL cholesterol levels due to their high amount of butter, and therefore, saturated fat found in croissants. Are croissants healthier than bread? Are croissants more fattening than bread? Bread tends to be a healthier option when compared to croissants, considering the ingredients used in each. The high butter content in croissants means they have a higher fat content when compared to bread. Bread is also generally lower in calories and carbs, per serving. Additionally, bread can be richer in minerals and nutrients than croissants. However, it is important to note that specific nutritional value will vary depending on the type of bread and croissant being compared. Is it bad to eat croissants every day? It isn’t necessarily bad to eat a croissant every day. While croissants cannot offer all essential nutrients, you can up the health value by adding other nutritious foods to your croissant such as fresh fruit or veggies. If you’re concerned about weight loss or overall health goals, you can also opt for smaller croissants or cut a medium-sized croissant in half to enjoy the deliciousness of this pastry while staying on track with your health goals. Is a croissant a healthy breakfast? A croissant on its own won’t make for a healthy breakfast. This is because croissants aren’t considered a nutrient-rich food. However, if eaten in combination with other foods that have more nutritional value, croissants can be incorporated in a healthy and balanced breakfast meal. Where can I buy the best croissants online? At Wildgrain, we specialize in making high-quality, fresh breads that are delivered directly to your door. Learn moreChocolate Croissant vs. Pain au Chocolat vs. Chocolatine
By Pilar Tackie-Codjoe, MS Wildgrain is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. What is a chocolate croissant? What are chocolate croissants made of? A chocolate croissant, also known as a "pain au chocolat," is a type of pastry that is made from layers of buttery, flaky dough shaped into a rectangle and filled with chocolate. The dough used for chocolate croissants is similar to traditional croissants, with the addition of melted chocolate. How do you make chocolate croissants? Chocolate croissant dough is made from flour, sugar, salt, yeast, and butter. To make chocolate croissants, the pastry dough is rolled out and spread with butter, then folded and rolled out again. This process, known as "lamination," creates layers of butter and dough that give the chocolate croissant its flaky texture. The croissant dough is then cut into rectangular shapes filled with chocolate and baked until golden brown and flaky. What is pain au chocolat? Why do people call pain au chocolat as chocolate croissants? "Pain au chocolat" is the French name for chocolate croissants. "Pain" means "bread" in French, and "au chocolat" means "with chocolate." So, "pain au chocolat" literally means "bread with chocolate." The term "chocolate croissant" is used in English to refer to the same pastry as "pain au chocolat." Both terms refer to a rectangular, chocolate-filled pastry made from layers of buttery, flaky dough. What’s the difference between regular croissants vs. pain au chocolat? Croissants and pain au chocolat are similar multi-layer, buttery pastries. The main differences between regular croissants and pain au chocolat are the filling and the shape. Croissants are a traditional French pastry; croissant dough is made from flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and butter. The dough is rolled out and spread with butter, then folded and rolled out in a multi-step technique called "lamination." The layering of butter and dough give the traditional croissant its classic flaky texture. Pain au chocolat, on the other hand, is a type of pastry that is made from the same dough as a regular croissant, but with the addition of chocolate inside. The dough is rolled out and spread with butter, then cut into rectangular shapes and filled with chocolate before being baked. Pain au chocolat is similar in texture to a traditional croissant, but with a chocolate filling and a rectangular shape. What is a chocolatine? What’s the difference between pain au chocolat vs. chocolatine? A chocolatine is a French pastry that is similar to a pain au chocolat, but with a few differences in the way it is made. Like a pain au chocolat, a chocolatine is made from many layers of buttery, flaky dough that is filled with chocolate. The main difference between a chocolatine and a pain au chocolat is the type of dough used. A chocolatine is made with a dough that is slightly sweeter and richer than the dough used for a pain au chocolat. The dough for a chocolatine is made from flour, sugar, butter, eggs, and milk, and is often flavored with vanilla or orange zest. Another difference between the two pastries is the way the dough is shaped. While a pain au chocolat is made by rolling out the dough and spreading it with butter before cutting it and filling it with chocolate, a chocolatine is made by folding the dough over the chocolate filling and sealing it before baking. This creates a slightly different texture and shape compared to a pain au chocolat. What’s the difference between chocolate croissant vs. pain au chocolat vs. chocolatine? Chocolate croissants, pain au chocolat, and chocolatines are all chocolate filled pastries that are made with several layers of flaky, buttery dough. While they are similar in many ways, there are a few key differences between chocolatine, pain au chocolat and chocolate croissant. Chocolate croissants and pain au chocolat are the same pastry; “pain au chocolat” is the French name for chocolate croissants. They are made from the same pastry dough as traditional croissants, but with the addition of chocolate inside and baked in a rectangular shape. A chocolatine is also a French pastry that is similar to a pain au chocolat, but with a few differences in the way it is made. The dough for a chocolatine is richer and slightly sweeter than the pain au chocolat dough, and is often flavored with additional vanilla or orange zest. A chocolatine is also shaped differently than a pain au chocolat. Is the pastry in croissants the same as in pain au chocolat (chocolate croissants)? Yes, the pastry used in croissants and pain au chocolat (also known as chocolate croissants) is the same. Both pastries are made from a dough of flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and butter. Pain au chocolat (chocolate croissants) have chocolate added to the pastry, while regular croissants have no added filing. Where can I buy the best chocolate croissants online? Learn moreBest Bread for Diabetics: Can You Eat Bread and Lose Weight?
By Rikki Hoffman, RDN, CDN Wildgrain is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. Our bodies break down carbohydrates into sugar molecules and then produce insulin to help digest those molecules. A diabetic may not make insulin, or their body cannot use the insulin that it does make. As a result, people with diabetes need to pay close attention to the carbohydrates they are consuming and may need to follow a low carbohydrate diet. What bread is best for diabetics? Bread generally contains a lot of carbohydrates, so the best bread for diabetics is bread that is lower in carbs and higher in fiber. Normally, carbs and sugars in bread will increase a diabetic’s blood sugar, but when fiber is eaten with the carbohydrates, the blood sugar does not rise as high or as fast. The breads with the highest fiber content are those made with whole grains. To make sure your bread is made primarily with whole grains, look for “whole” in the first ingredient (or the second ingredient after water). Added sugars in a bread will add to the carbohydrate count and will raise a diabetic’s blood sugar, so breads without added sugars (including high fructose corn syrup, honey, agave, maple syrup, fruit juices, or other sweeteners) are healthier for diabetics. Is bread good for Type 1 diabetes? What is the healthiest bread for Type 1 diabetes? Type 1 diabetics take insulin to adjust for their body’s lack of ability to make insulin and have to calculate how much to take based on the amount of carbohydrates they will be eating. Bread can certainly be a part of a Type 1 diabetics’ diet, as long as the amount of insulin the person administers is adjusted to account for the carbohydrates in their bread. The best type of bread for Type 1 diabetics, and for the general population, is 100% whole grain bread that doesn’t contain added sugars. Is bread good for Type 2 diabetes? What is the healthiest bread for Type 2 diabetes? Type 2 diabetics may also need to eat a low carbohydrate diet, and may or may not use insulin to help control blood sugar. Even with the low carbohydrate diet, carbohydrates can, and should, be a part of a diabetic’s diet. As with Type 1 diabetics, 100% whole grain bread without added sugars is the best bread to help keep blood sugars stable. To take it to the next level, there is some evidence that bread made with whole grain oats may be even healthier for Type 2 diabetics than other whole grain bread. Oats contain a type of fiber called beta glucans, which have been shown in studies to raise blood less and more slowly in Type 2 diabetics. Is multigrain bread good for diabetics? Will multigrain bread raise blood sugar? Multigrain bread is bread that contains multiple types of grains, like wheat, rye, or barley. Multigrain breads can be made with whole grains or refined grains. Like with all breads, a multigrain bread made with whole grains is generally better for blood sugar than one made with refined grains. Will sourdough bread raise blood sugar? Does sourdough bread lower blood sugar? Sourdough bread will not lower blood sugar, but it may raise blood sugar less and more slowly. Some research suggests that slow-fermented breads, like sourdough, do not raise blood sugar as high as other breads that are instead made with baker’s yeast. If the main flour used is a whole grain, that would be even better for a diabetic. The fermenting process involved in making sourdough bread may also increase the availability of fiber in the bread. Is sourdough bread good for diabetics? Sourdough bread is made through a slow fermentation process, which may cause this type of bread to raise blood sugar more slowly than other breads. As a result, sourdough bread could be a great choice for those with diabetes. Whole grain sourdough bread is the best sourdough bread for diabetics. What is the best whole grain bread for diabetics? Any bread made with 100% whole grains is a better choice for diabetics. The high fiber content of those breads leads to a lower and slower rise in blood sugar compared to other breads. On top of that, whole grain sourdough bread and bread made from oats have been shown to further slow the rise of blood sugar, which could make them an even healthier choice for those with diabetes. Learn moreBest Bread for Weight Loss: Can You Eat Bread and Lose Weight?
By Rikki Hoffman, RDN, CDN Wildgrain is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. Weight loss is a very popular and oftentimes complicated goal. Any strategy for losing weight depends on a number of factors, and diets should be personalized to the individual. As a general rule, limiting processed foods, reducing stress, and getting adequate exercise, sleep, and hydration can all play a part in weight loss. Food plays a role in losing weight, and here we take a look at how you can include bread as part of weight loss goals. Can you eat bread and lose weight? Will I gain weight if I eat bread every day? Some popular trendy diets suggest avoiding all breads and carb-rich foods, but abstaining from all carbohydrates or breads is not necessarily a healthy way to lose weight. Really, all foods, including bread, can be a part of a weight loss diet, as long as they are eaten thoughtfully and in moderation. Eating bread every day does not necessarily mean that you will gain weight. Achieving your weight loss goal will depend on how much bread you are eating and what other food and lifestyle habits you are partaking in, like exercise and sleep. Plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean meats, along with bread, can contribute to a healthy weight loss diet. Will I gain weight if I eat white bread? Can you eat white bread and lose weight? Yes, you can eat white bread and lose weight. No one type of food needs to be avoided completely when trying to lose weight, and that includes white bread! Whole grain bread has been shown to be more helpful when trying to lose weight, but white bread in moderation can certainly be part of a weight loss diet and eating white bread does not necessarily mean that you will gain weight. Is whole grain bread good for weight loss? Does whole grain bread help lose belly fat? Yes, whole grain bread is very good for weight loss. Eating whole grains have been shown to help eliminate more belly fat when compared to eating refined grains. Whole grain bread contains fiber, which may also help keep you full for longer, making it easier to eat less overall and help lose weight. Can I eat multigrain bread for weight loss? Yes, you can eat multigrain bread and still lose weight. Multigrain bread is bread that contains multiple types of grains, like wheat, rye, or barley. Multigrain breads can contain whole grains or refined grains. Like with all breads, a multigrain bread made with whole grains is better for weight loss than one made with white refined flour, but either multigrain bread or white bread can be a part of a weight loss diet plan when they’re combined with other healthy foods and exercise. What breads should I avoid for weight loss? No food, including bread, needs to be avoided completely when trying to lose weight, but moderation is key. Breads with no fiber and a lot of added sugar should be limited when trying to lose weight. Most breads from the supermarket will contain some added sugar, so make sure to compare nutrition facts labels and look for a bread with less than 1 gram of added sugar per slice. Choosing a bread with no or minimal added sugar is a healthier option that can help your weight loss goals. What is the best bread for weight loss? The best bread for weight loss is a bread that is the most filling and contains the least unnecessary calories. When shopping, look for options that contain the lowest amount of added sugar and the highest amount of fiber. This combination for the best weight loss bread is usually 100% whole grain bread. Learn moreWhat’s the Difference: Croissant vs. Brioche vs. Crescent Rolls vs. Danish vs. English Muffin?
By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. Croissants, brioche, crescent rolls, danish, and English muffins are all popular options to enjoy for breakfast. When trying to decide which to eat, it is important to understand the differences between each treat. What are croissants? Croissants are French pastries, made with yeast, flour, salt, sugar, milk, water, and a large amount of butter. Croissants get their signature airy and flaky texture through a process called lamination. During this process, butter is folded into dough many times before the croissants are shaped and baked. This results in the many layers that are signature to croissants. Is croissant dough the same as puff pastry? Are croissants made of puff pastry? Puff pastry only contains three ingredients: flour, butter, and salt. Puff pastry is similar to croissants in that it has visible airy layers. However, croissant dough is different from puff pastry because croissant dough contains yeast, but puff pastry does not contain yeast. The yeast in croissants give them a lighter and softer texture than that of puff pastry. Additionally, the milk and sugar in croissant dough that is not present in puff pastry creates a richer dough with better flavor. Puff pastry is flakier and more crumbly than croissants. What is the difference between a croissant vs. brioche? Brioche and croissants contain a lot of the same ingredients, including milk, sugar, butter, and yeast. One of the main differences between croissants and brioche is the density and texture. Brioche is more similar to a thick loaf of bread and is not as flaky or buttery as a croissant. Brioche dough does not contain as much butter as croissants, but it has more sugar and contains eggs, which contributes to the denser texture of brioche. What is the difference between a croissant vs. crescent rolls? Crescent rolls have a similar crescent-moon shape as croissants, but most aspects of these baked goods are different. Unlike croissants, crescent rolls are not laminated. This makes crescent rolls more bread-like than croissants. However, both croissants and crescent rolls contain yeast leading them to rise and have a lighter texture. Additionally, because they are not laminated, crescent rolls have a softer exterior than croissants, which are crispier. What is the difference between a croissant vs. danish? Croissants and Danish pastries are both multilayered and laminated. Like brioche, Danish pastries contain eggs, which is one of the main differences between these pastries and croissants. Danish pastries contain eggs because the dough needs to be sturdier in order to add fillings. During the lamination process, Danish pastries are not folded as many times as croissants. What is the difference between a croissant vs. English muffin? English muffins contain milk, butter, flour, sugar, eggs, and yeast. However, unlike croissants, English muffins are not laminated. English muffin dough is soft and cooked on a griddle similar to how you would cook a pancake; however, the yeast causes the English muffin to rise. English muffins are typically made with bread flour, which is high in protein and creates the chewy texture that they are known for. They have an open structure but are not flaky or buttery like croissants are. If you are looking for a healthier breakfast option compared to croissants, brioche, crescent rolls, and Danish pastries, English muffins are a great choice. Unlike laminated pastries, English muffins do not contain as much fat because the butter content is lower. For example, a croissant contains the daily need of saturated fat with 11.6 grams compared to 0.259 grams in English muffins). Where can I buy fresh croissants online? Learn moreMargherita Pizza vs. Regular Cheese Pizza vs. Neapolitan vs. Marinara vs. Caprese Pizza
By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. You would be hard pressed to find someone who does not enjoy a good slice of pizza. This cheesy bread topped with tomato sauce is a favorite treat among many people. This article will explain the difference between types of pizza and which are healthier than others. What is a Margherita pizza? Margherita pizza dough is made with flour, salt, and yeast and topped with fresh basil, tomatoes, olive oil, sea salt, garlic, and mozzarella. The tomatoes are sliced and put onto the dough, followed by the garlic and basil, and then rounds of sliced mozzarella. Margherita pizza is drizzled with olive oil and sea salt before baking. It is cooked on a high temperature taking only minutes to cook. When made correctly, Margherita pizza is crispy and not greasy. What is the difference between Margherita pizza and Neapolitan pizza and caprese pizza? Margherita pizza is a variety of Neapolitan pizza, which can have many toppings and variations. Neapolitan pizza has specific requirements for ingredients, size, construction of the dough, and the way it is cooked. The dough is made with flour, water, salt, and yeast. The flour used must be type 00, type 0, or a mix of the two. In Europe, flour is characterized by how finely it is milled. Type 0 and 00 flour are the finest ground, with a consistency like baby powder. The finer a flour is ground, the smoother the dough, resulting in a softer baked product. The tomatoes traditionally are from San Marzano or from the volcano plains south of Mount Vesuvius. Caprese pizza is similar to Margherita pizza in that the toppings are mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil. However, caprese pizza uses a mozzarella known as buffalo milk mozzarella that has higher moisture content, so it is less likely to shrink when heated. Additionally, the cheese on caprese pizza is shredded instead of sliced. Caprese pizza is also a variety of Neapolitan pizza. What is the difference between Margherita pizza and marinara pizza? Marinara pizza differs from Margherita pizza because marinara pizza just uses tomatoes, garlic, oregano, and oil. There is no cheese on marinara pizza unlike on caprese and margherita pizza, which both use mozzarella cheese as a topping. Marinara pizza is still considered to be a type of Neapolitan pizza. What is the difference between Margherita pizza and regular pizza and cheese pizza? If made correctly, Margherita pizza is authentic Neapolitan cuisine, whereas cheese pizza is a product of the United States. One of the first differences is that regular and cheese pizza do not have to be made with the 00/0 flour, which is a characteristic of the Margherita pizza. Any wheat flour will work for regular cheese pizza. Additionally, Margherita pizza is always made with a thin crust (around 3 mm), whereas regular cheese pizza can be made with various crust heights. With cheese pizza, the cheese is shredded, rather than sliced, and often more types of cheese are used than just mozzarella. With regular pizza, many toppings can be used other than just tomato, cheese, and basil, such as pepperoni, sausage, and other delicious toppings. Is Margherita pizza the healthiest pizza? Is Margherita pizza healthier than regular pizza? Margherita pizza, made the proper way, is made with fresh, clean ingredients that are not highly processed, and as a result, can be considered healthier than regular cheese pizza. Although mozzarella does have a pretty high fat content, it also has around 6 grams of protein and consists of 11% of the daily value of calcium per ounce. It also contains bacteria such as Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus fermentum that have been purported to improve gut health and decrease inflammation in your body. Additionally, tomatoes are a source of vitamin C, potassium, folate, and vitamin K. They’re also a major dietary source of lycopene, which is an antioxidant linked to reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer. And unlike some regular cheese pizzas which have sugar added in the sauce, traditional Margherita pizza has no added sugar. However, Margherita pizza, like its American counterpart, is high in sodium, so it should be enjoyed in moderation. Additionally, because the flour is ground so finely, most vitamins are no longer present, including B12, and micronutrients, including iron and zinc, are also lost. Is Margherita pizza with whole wheat flour a healthier pizza? Whole wheat flour generally has more health benefits than other types of flours. This includes increased dietary fiber, magnesium, selenium, B-vitamins, iron, and folic acid. It is safe to say that substituting whole wheat flour into a recipe will increase the health benefits, so Margherita pizza with whole wheat flour is a healthier pizza. However, would it still be considered Margherita pizza without the 00/0 flour? That's for you to decide! Where can I buy frozen Margherita pizza online? At Wildgrain, we specialize in making high-quality, fresh baked goods that are delivered directly to your door. Learn moreGnocchi vs. Pasta: Is Gnocchi a Healthy Alternative to Pasta?
By Lucy Yanckello, Ph.D. Wildgrain, opens in a new tab is the first bake-from-frozen subscription box for sourdough breads, fresh pastas, and artisanal pastries. Pasta is one of the most popular foods in the world. Many believe that the potato-based nuggets known as gnocchi fall under the category of pasta, but some categorize them as dumplings. No matter what you consider gnocchi to be, it is often used in similar ways to pasta. However, pasta is mainly wheat-based, whereas gnocchi are potato-based, so which is healthier? What is gnocchi? Is gnocchi a pasta or potato? Gnocchi originates from Italy and is typically made using flour, eggs, and mashed potatoes. Other ingredients can be used in place of potatoes, including the Italian cheese known as ricotta. In Italian, the word gnocchi means “knuckle,” which is what the dumplings resemble. Gnocchi are often rolled onto the back of a fork to create indentations that hold onto whatever sauce they are tossed in. Some believe that gnocchi is a type of pasta, whereas others believe it is a form of potato dumpling. What’s the difference between ricotta gnocchi vs. potato gnocchi? Which is better: potato or ricotta gnocchi? Traditional potato gnocchi are made of potato bound together with flour and egg, whereas ricotta gnocchi replaces the potato with ricotta cheese. Because of ricotta’s springy texture and the lack of potatoes, ricotta gnocchi has a lighter texture than potato gnocchi. Both potato gnocchi and ricotta gnocchi are formed by rolling the dough into a log and cutting it into small nugget shaped portions. Because ricotta gnocchi are made with cheese, there is a higher protein content than is present in the carbohydrate-forward potato gnocchi. Is gnocchi healthier than pasta? Should I replace pasta with gnocchi? Similar to pasta, gnocchi is high in carbohydrates and low in protein. Although both are carbohydrate-heavy foods, it has been shown that regular pasta may have less of an effect on blood sugar levels. One publication points to the fact that pasta doesn’t raise blood sugar after a meal to the level that potatoes do. However, it is important to note that the study compared plain potatoes to pasta, not gnocchi to pasta. Which is better for weight loss: gnocchi or pasta? A two ounce portion of pasta contains around 43 grams of carbohydrates, with only two of those grams coming from fiber. Similarly, a two ounce portion of gnocchi contains 19 grams of carbohydrates, with only 0.9 grams coming from fiber. Although gnocchi does appear at first glance to be lower in carbohydrates, because it is denser, a two ounce portion will be smaller. Due to the smaller and denser nature of gnocchi, it is more likely that you will end up eating bigger portions than if you chose regular pasta. Although all foods can be part of a healthy diet in moderation, if you are trying to lose weight opt for other options than gnocchi or pasta. Which is better for muscle building: pasta vs. gnocchi? A high-carbohydrate diet is beneficial for those looking to build muscle. It has been found that in comparison to a low-carbohydrate diet, eating a high-carbohydrate diet before high-intensity exercise increased stamina, extended time before exhaustion was reached, and led to a higher amount of calories burned. Additionally, it is necessary to eat optimal levels of protein to gain muscle, and a two ounce portion of pasta contains 7.5 grams of protein, while the same size portion of gnocchi contains only 2.5 grams. Ricotta gnocchi may be a better option than potato gnocchi for those looking to gain muscle, since there is a higher protein content in the cheese-based dough. What is the difference between gnocchi vs. tortellini vs. ravioli vs. agnolotti? Gnocchi are potato-based dumplings that are not stuffed. Gnocchi are typically boiled and tossed in a tomato-based sauce. Tortellini, ravioli, and agnolotti are all stuffed Italian pastas made with semolina flour. Tortellini is a stuffed pasta in the shape of a ring. It usually has a meat or cheese-based filling and is traditionally served in broth. Ravioli are also a filled pasta. Ravioli usually consists of cheese, meat, or other ingredients stuffed between two thin pieces of pasta. This type of pasta is often square, and is typically tossed in a sauce that compliments what the ravioli is stuffed with. Agnolotti are a type of ravioli, from a specific region of Italy known as the Piedmont region. It can be square or in a half-moon shape, and are stuffed with beef or vegetables. Unlike ravioli, agnolotti does not typically contain cheese in the stuffing. Where can I buy the best fresh gnocchi and pasta online? If you’ve ever had a sandwich on rye bread, you know there’s nothing quite like its slightly nutty flavor. Fortunately, in addition to being delicious, rye bread has some nutritional benefits that help it fit nicely into a healthy diet, especially when it’s a rye sourdough bread. This article explores the various benefits of both rye bread and sourdough bread - separately and together. What is sourdough rye bread? What is in sourdough rye bread? Sourdough rye bread is a slow-fermented bread made with rye flour and a sourdough starter. There are four different types of rye bread: light rye bread, dark rye bread, marbled rye bread, and pumpernickel bread. Light rye bread is made from white rye flour and is considered a refined bread. Dark rye bread can be made from whole rye grains, but not always. Some dark rye breads are made with a white rye flour and then colored with cocoa powder, instant coffee, or molasses. Marbled rye bread is made from light and dark rye doughs that are rolled together. Pumpernickel bread is made from coarsely ground whole rye grains. Any of these four types of rye bread can also be sourdough if the dough is fermented. Is sourdough rye better for you? How healthy is sourdough rye bread? Sourdough rye bread may be made with white or whole grain rye. Like other whole grains, rye contains important nutrients, such as complex carbohydrates, antioxidants, essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, and protein. Rye even contains more fiber than other whole grains, as well as certain b-vitamins, including folate. Flour made from whole grains has been shown to help lower cholesterol, keep blood sugar more stable in diabetics, and keep you feeling full longer; whole grain flour is therefore considered healthier than regular white flour. The fermentation process of sourdough bread may add nutritional value, by increasing the availability of certain nutrients in the bread. To identify the healthiest sourdough rye bread, look for “100% whole grain rye flour” to be the first ingredient, or the second ingredient after water. Is sourdough rye bread good for weight loss? Sourdough rye bread may aid in weight loss. One study found that mice that were fed a diet of whole grain rye had reduced body weight when compared to mice fed a diet of whole grain wheat. Another small study found that whole grain rye bread, especially sourdough rye bread, helped control blood sugar and appetite in humans, which could certainly help with weight loss. However, more studies are needed to determine how good sourdough rye bread is for weight loss in humans. As with all whole grain breads, the nutritional value of sourdough rye bread also depends on the other ingredients. If the bread contains added sugar, this can be detrimental for a weight loss goal. Is sourdough rye bread easy to digest? There is good reason to believe that sourdough rye bread is particularly helpful with digestion. Rye has been found to improve mild constipation when compared with white bread, even better than some laxatives! And the long fermentation period of some sourdough breads may alter the starch content of the bread, making it more easily digestible than other breads for some people. Is sourdough rye bread good for IBS? IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome, is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by constipation, diarrhea, and bloating. Some patients with IBS follow a low FOD-MAP (Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Monosaccharides and Polyols) diet. Foods that contain gluten and are high in fiber, such as rye bread, are usually not included in this diet. However, some sourdough rye breads are fermented with specific bacteria that break down some of these FOD-MAPs, creating a low FOD-MAP bread. These low FOD-MAP rye sourdough breads may be more easily tolerated by some IBS patients. Which bread is better for you: rye bread or sourdough bread? As long as they’re made with whole grains and have limited or no added sugar, both rye bread and sourdough bread are healthy bread options. Sourdough bread may be even healthier than regular bread because the fermentation makes certain vitamins and minerals easier for our bodies to absorb. To combine the benefits of rye bread and sourdough bread, choose a rye sourdough bread! Looking for healthy sourdough bread?
